ADVENTURES IN VOLLEYBALL 1
I’ve been wanting to write this story for a long time because it displays how dramatically strength and conditioning can affect the outcome of a sports event.
While my memory is a little hazy on the details, that shouldn’t affect the primary lesson.
The Prequel: I had been providing strength and conditioning for the Van Nuys High School Girls Volleyball team from 1992. During the summer the girls would perform weight workouts three times a week. These followed their volleyball practices, and though they were tired, I expected them to be able to perform explosive movements (hang power cleans, hang power sn**ches, power jerks, hang split sn**ches and hang split cleans) along with squats, lunges, presses and good mornings. Not all of these movements were programmed for any one session. During the league season, weight workouts were reduced to twice a week.
In 1995, the Van Nuys team found themselves playing for the City 4A championship against Palisades, a perennial city volleyball powerhouse. Palisades High School was located in a wealthy area and all their athletes could afford to play for a club team. They were all members of the same club team and their high school coach was also their club coach. Van Nuys was in a working class neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley, and only some of the girls could afford to play for a club team. Everyone expected a blowout in favor of Palisades.
This was in the days before rally scoring so the first team to reach 15 points was declared the winner.
The first game was a blowout in favor of Palisades with the score something like 15-6. Van Nuys did a little better in the second game but still came up short 15-11 (These are approximate scores). When the third game came about the tournament organizers were ready for a coronation and began to get the victory stand ready.
Unexpectedly the third game was close with Van Nuys ultimately emerging with the victory 16-14.
In the fourth game Van Nuys won 15-10, and then they took the fifth game, 15-7, to win the championship.
What happened? Palisades players did not lose their skills from Game 1 to Game 5. The Van Nuys players did not suddenly become more skillful in the same span. I believe only the coaching staff truly understood what happened.
Because I required the girls to perform explosive movements after their volleyball workouts, they were able to move quickly and aggressively even though they were fatigued. In the fourth and fifth games, the Van Nuys girls were jumping, running and hitting at closer to 100% than the Palisades girls. This was a strength and conditioning victory.
I’m sure that the volleyball coaches, Dave Bessler, Bob Grella and David Chae, understood how it worked. Furthermore the Van Nuys team had played the entire season with every starter available for every match. Lack of injuries is another by-product of strength and conditioning. I hope the strength and conditioning community appreciates this story.

This week's SportsEdTV blog
The Role of Talent in Weightlifting | SportsEdTV This blog explores the impact of talent in weightlifting, emphasizing hard work, community support, and respect for all athletes.
ADDICTED MUTANTS
In 1972 I was fortunate enough to travel to the Munich Olympic Games and watch every weightlifting session. The field was full of stars and and great lifting action was eagerly anticipated. I traveled with my coach, Bob Hise II, and he guided me quite exquisitely, introducing me to a number of international officials. I had trained with several members of the U.S. lifting team and so I had more than a casual rooting interest in the outcomes.
I decided to try and get into the Olympic village and visit our lifters. I had the foresight to borrow a USA team jacket from one of my teammates, Roger Quinn, before departing. I put on that jacket and made my way to the wrestling training quarters. I lined up with a group of wrestlers who were waiting for the shuttle that would take them into the village. The shuttle arrived, I got on board with the wrestlers and there were no credential checks. The shuttle drove us into the village. I got off the shuttle, walked up a flight of stairs and I was in the Olympic Village.
As I walked around, I noticed that nearly everyone was glowing. They were all young, healthy athletes in the peak of condition. They had that glow that was all the more evident when they were viewed as a group. I was amazed and overwhelmed.
The biology major in me gradually realized that every athlete in that village had DNA nucleotide sequences that were not present in the vast majority of the general population. I realized that I was amongst the greatest aggregation of mutants on the planet. Since that epiphany I’ve always viewed the Olympic Games as a mutant congregation.
After Munich, I continued on my coaching journey and began to make observations of the many athletes that I had either coached, trained with or encountered. Popular media had always tried to present athletes as being dedicated and disciplined. That perspective was gradually worn away in my mind as I came to the realization that what was really occuring was that athletes were secreting molecules in the context of competition that induced a state of euphoria. Athletes were addicts who were addicted to the euphoria caused by the chemical they secreted in their own bodies during the act of performance.
I was explaining this to a fellow alum at our 15th graduation reunion. He immediately tagged it as “the Rush Freak theory of the Universe”.
So as the Olympics are currently being conducted and the popular media portrays the athletes as everyday people who are tremendously dedicated, I know that I’m watching the greatest collection of addicted mutants on the planet.
