In honor of Nelson Mandela’s birthday (July 18, 1918), we’re highlighting archival materials from UCLA Library Digital Collections.
Mandela was imprisoned from 1962-1990 for his activism against South Africa’s policy of apartheid. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 and became South Africa’s first democratically elected president in 1994. His influence extends beyond South Africa, as noted by his prominence in these materials from Kenya and Brazil.
Post-presidency, Mandela remained an activist and worked to combat poverty and HIV/AIDS in South Africa through the Nelson Mandela Foundation. His legacy as a champion of human rights continues to inspire today.
Digitization of these materials was supported by UCLA Library’s Modern Endangered Archives Program and International Digital Ephemera Project, funded by Arcadia.

In the 1950s, the Los Angeles Times published a daily photograph series called "Know Your City" in which readers would identify Los Angeles landmarks based on a picture and a small clue. 70 years later, the original photographs and captions are preserved in the L.A. Times Photographic Collection in UCLA Library Special Collections.
⭐️ Can you identify these L.A. locations from the archival photographs and clues?
