Amidst the vibrant tapestry of Los Angeles's artistic landscape, our College proudly celebrates the remarkable achievement of Phung Huynh, Assistant Professor of Art and recipient of the esteemed 2024 Marciano Art Foundation Artadia Award.
Phungβs work captivates audiences on national and international stages, with exhibitions at the Gagosian Gallery in Beverly Hills and the U.S. Embassy in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. With a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Art Center College of Design and a MFA degree from NYU, Huynh's academic pedigree underscores her commitment to artistic excellence and scholarly inquiry. While her artistic prowess transcends conventional boundaries, as evidenced by her diverse practice spanning drawing, painting, public art, and community engagement.
At the heart of Huynh's practice lies a profound exploration of cultural perception and representation. Through her thought-provoking artworks, she challenges conventional beauty standards and interrogates the complexities of identity, particularly within the context of Cambodian and Vietnamese refugees resettled in the United States. Huynh's innovative approach to addressing social and cultural issues through art serves as a catalyst for meaningful dialogue and introspection.
In honoring Phung Huynh with the 2024 Marciano Art Foundation Artadia Award, we celebrate not only her artistic achievements but also her unwavering dedication to pushing the boundaries of creative expression and advancing critical discourse within the arts. Last Saturday we, and , had the absolute pleasure of hosting the "Blood In Blood Out" book launch and 30th Anniversary film screening.
For the first time in 30 years, you were able to experience the film, which speaks to family, community and LA Raza in East LA, in a way never before seen. Director Taylor Hackford, Screenwriter Jimmy Santiago Baca, Photographer Merrick Morton, cast and crew were present for this monumental occasion as well as President Berenecea Johnson Eanes, Congressman Castro, Dean Trzaskoma and the East LA community.
Serving our community and providing life changing opportunity to our students is what we do best, and we're extremely proud and thankful to you for it. Salud!
Tomorrow, every seat in the Theatre at will be filled with Angelenos. For the first time in 30 years, the will be shown on the big screen in high definition for the people of East Los Angeles to experience.
