It is my belief that each detail of our lives offers a snapshot of who we are and how we show up for our lives and for others. I remember watching a completely disheveled woman in the library on day. She held up the line as she argued with the librarian over late fees while her hands rummaged and shoveled through her purse that overflowed with receipts, gum wrappers, random papers, credit cards, and who knows what else. “This always happens,” she ranted. “And this is just the library,” I thought to myself. “How are you showing up in the rest of your life?”

Clearly, this woman had no clarity as she sifted to find the receipt that showed she had paid her late fees already. How would the situation have looked differently if there had been some type of organization in place for this woman? Some times, people feel that they are organized and that they do have systems that work for them, when to the rest of the world, they do not. Starting with one area, like a purse, is a great gateway into seeing how other areas of life function for an individual. I like to compare organization to a deep tissue back massage. The clutter and mess represent the knots. Like a massage, some knots run deeper and tighter than others and with a little work, all of that pent up energy can be released restoring clarity, ease & peace of mind. After our initial session, I devise an action plan based on your needs and goals that targets each knot. The action plan serves as our foundation for accountability. Each organization “knot” takes on an organic life of its own. Sometimes, where there is physical clutter, there is emotional clutter. Organizing can be healing, and just like that massage, soothing. For some, clearing clutter is like exorcising ghosts; it is a release of the past to more clearly see the present and future.
