🌟 Honoring MLK: A Legacy Beyond the Surface 🌟
On this sacred day, AMAAD stands in homage to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a leader whose vision transcended the boundaries of time and injustice. As we commemorate MLK Day, we pledge not only to celebrate the man but also the complexities of the movement he spearheaded.
MLK's legacy, often polished and sanitized, deserves a nuanced understanding. We uplift the MLK who passionately advocated for fair housing, recognizing the profound impact of housing on individual and community well-being. His commitment to justice extended beyond integration, reflecting a profound awareness of systemic issues plaguing our society.
In our tribute, we echo the often-overlooked voices within the movement, including LGBTQ leaders like Bayard Rustin and Audre Lorde. Their contributions were instrumental, and we honor their resilience and unwavering commitment to justice.
Today, we commit to unearthing the unvarnished MLK, whose convictions were complex and whose journey mirrored the intricate tapestry of our collective history. Let us not only celebrate but critically engage with the legacy of MLK, understanding the layers that have often been whitewashed.
As we stand on the shoulders of giants, we draw inspiration from the courage to question, the audacity to dream, and the unwavering commitment to a world where justice knows no bounds. Happy MLK Day! 🌈✨
Dear Friend,
Today is Giving Tuesday, one of the biggest giving days of the entire year. The AMAAD Institute serves intersectional communities that carry a disproportionate burden of multiple inequities, such as homelessness, substance and recovery support, mental and behavioral health.
AMAAD has always and will continue to be a solution to our communities’ needs. Earlier this month, AMAAD held the grand opening of the House of Dignity, AMAAD’s first housing solution, specifically created and designed for Black transgender women. This year, AMAAD expanded our community education initiative, which specifically provides opioid and substance use prevention and education through South Los Angeles and more broadly. AMAAD has also expanded our youth services with the development of our Youth Diversion and Development department, specifically designed to create programs, services, and activities that support and mentor LGBTQ+ youth and young people, their families, and their caregivers; and this only speaks to some of the great work AMAAD does every day for many of our community’s most underserved.
https://amaadinstitute.harnessgiving.org/donate/?selected-method=one-time&amount=50&campaign_id=0 GIVE 💙
AMAAD, in Swahili, means support, and all it is takes is one minute to support and to be a part of the solution. Your donation is 100% tax-deductible, and all funds raised today will go towards helping us to serve our community even more.
We could not do our work without your support.
Thank you,
Gerald Garth (he, him)

AMAAD extends heartfelt gratitude to all veterans for their dedicated service and sacrifices. As we observe this day of remembrance, we pay special homage to the Black and Brown LGBTQ+ veterans who, despite facing unique challenges in today's political landscape, have courageously served our nation.
On this day, AMAAD stands in solemn acknowledgment and deep appreciation for the bravery and resilience of those who have served. In honor of their commitment, our offices will be closed. We recognize the extra heartsease carried by our Black and Brown LGBTQ+ veterans, and we hold space for their distinct experiences.
Today, we reflect on the strength and courage of our veterans, acknowledging their contributions to the ideals of freedom and justice. AMAAD remains committed to supporting all those who have served and to fostering an inclusive space for healing and growth within our communities.
AMAAD Institute is proud to announce the grand opening of its latest community housing solution, the House of Dignity. This transitional housing facility and peer support services program are tailored specifically for justice-involved transgender women of color. The House of Dignity is part of AMAAD's peer support-based model, aimed at meeting the unique needs of diverse communities in South Los Angeles, with a special emphasis on BIPOC LGBTQIA+ individuals.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony for the House of Dignity will be held on November 17, 2023, to mark the commencement of this vital initiative. The event will feature a special performance by Neverending Nina, renowned for her powerful advocacy within the LGBTQIA+ community. Community leaders, advocates, and allies will join the celebration, highlighting the significance of this endeavor.
AMAAD's commitment to holistic recovery and healing is evident in its continuous efforts to address systemic disadvantages faced by marginalized communities. The House of Dignity is a testament to this dedication, providing safe and supportive transitional housing to justice-involved transgender women of color. Discrimination, houselessness, and a lack of safety are issues disproportionately affecting this community. The House of Dignity aims to provide a safe haven where residents can heal, grow, and thrive.

The AMAAD Institute is honored to celebrate LGBT History Month. We know that it is important to uplift the voices and movements that that have propelled our community. October is LGBT History Month, where each year the history and achievements of le***an, gay, bisexual and transgender people are celebrated. This occasion began in 1994 when Rodney Wilson, a Missouri high school teacher, believed that a month should be dedicated to the celebration of gay and le***an history, and October was chosen to coincide with other existing traditions, such as Coming Out Day on October 11. Throughout the month we will highlight the trailblazers that have paved the way for our equality today.
It's about that TIME ‼️‼️
