The Indominable Biddy Mason
The definition of indominable should include a picture of Biddy Mason.
Bridget, called Biddy, was born into bo***ge in 1818 in the South. Little is known of her early life other than she was taken from her mother at a young age and resold several times before she was trafficked to San Bernadino in California, a free state, in 1851. In a remarkable act of bravery and persistence, Biddy, her three daughters, and 13 other women and their children sued for, and won, their freedom in 1856. She took the surname Mason to mark her new life as a free woman in the pueblo of Los Angeles.
Despite being deprived of formal learning, young Biddy honed critical nursing and midwifery skills that soon proved essential to her future success. Once able to charge for her services, she not only provided for her family but diligently saved money to purchase land on what is now known as Spring Street. Mason, who died in 1891, amassed a fortune of $300,000 (estimated at $8.5 million nowadays), established the first elementary school for Black children in the City, nursed the sick and indigent, donated to lift-up her community, and co-founded First African Methodist Episcopal Church, or F.A.M.E., which still stands today.
It took nearly a century, but Los Angeles finally paid homage to one of its brightest angels in 1988 when Mayor Tom Bradley, and F.A.M.E. parishioners, gathered in Evergreen Cemetery to mark her grave with a tombstone. Two years later, a park devoted to her memory opened between Broadway and Spring streets, the site where she built her homestead. May she rest in power.
