While working on set on One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest in 1976, famed photographer Mary Ellen Mark (working with writer Karen Folger Jacobs) first encountered and documented the lives of the women in the Oregon State Hospital in Salem — the only locked psychiatric ward in the state — and created a groundbreaking book called Ward 81 that was released in 1979.

Now, 44 years since its publication, the late photographer’s book is being celebrated with an expanded edition, a special exhibit at The Image Centre in Toronto, and a new documentary called Ward 81 Voices directed by Mark’s husband and long-time collaborator, Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Martin Bell.

The film uses audio recordings, archival materials and Mark’s extraordinary photographs to offer a remarkable snapshot of her creative process in action and the humanistic approach and long-term commitment to her subjects that have made Mark’s images landmarks in the field of documentary photography.

Bailey Coleman, the teenage daughter of BLT alum Jason Coleman, is a leukemia survivor and she has recently been selected as a candidate to participate in a leadership program called Student Visionaries of the Year with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society!

Student Visionaries of the Year is a groundbreaking philanthropic leadership development program for high school students. Every year, courageous young leaders embark on an exciting 7-week journey with a goal to create a world without blood cancers, striving to earn the Student Visionary of the Year title.

On January 23, 2023, Otis College of Art and Design unveiled a partnership with Netflix to launch a new program that will give underrepresented students a leg up in exciting careers in entertainment. The Access: Netflix x Otis Entertainment Certificate Program, which is now accepting applications, leverages both Otis’ leadership and commitment to diversity and Netflix’s unparalleled industry expertise to provide a unique opportunity for historically underrepresented students of color, who have traditionally lacked access to jobs in entertainment marketing. Admitted students will learn critical art and design skills with Otis College, while receiving hands-on training from entertainment industry professionals.
