Come join us in Pasadena for Elizabeth B. Tucker's Charcoal & White Pastel Workshop! In this “techniques” class you will create a still life drawing using a white pastel in pencil form and soft charcoal pencil to create a still life drawing on Canson Mi-Tientes charcoal paper. Elizabeth will go over using these two materials together in a way that's different than what is usually taught but gives a result of a fully rendered work with full coverage and a complete range of light and dark values. In addition to drawing and rendering, Elizabeth will talk about designing still life set ups, lighting still life's, and how to transfer an image onto your paper or canvas!⁠

We're pleased as punch to announce that some folks from Stoneground are coming to our store! On February 26th from 12-4pm, come to our Pasadena location where you'll get the opportunity to try out their vivid paints and ask them all the questions you like!⁠

In case you didn't know, we've recently started restocking Stoneground's beautiful gouache and watercolor. Inspired by nature and made by hand, Stoneground crafts their paint in small batches the traditional way, assuring the quality and vivid reflective nature of handmade paints. They combine the world’s finest pigments with a binder made of only locally sourced organic honey, and the world’s finest gum Arabic, foregoing the use of fillers, extenders, or preservatives, which muddy and dull paint unnecessarily. So rad!⁠

Book Alley ⁠
Just two doors down from Blue Rooster, this overflowing gem of a book store is right up our alley. They have too many books to count as well as records. Reset your mind while breathing in that classic old paper smell and getting lost in the stacks.⁠

Comics Factory ⁠
On the other side of the block, this excellent comic book store has been open since 1994. Chock full of all the comics and action figures you could ever want, Comics Factory also hosts signing events and more.⁠

Armory ⁠
Armory Center for the Arts is a nonprofit organization that provides kids and adult art classes and exhibitions of contemporary art. Admission to their gallery is always free. Also, a heads up in case you didn't already know, Armory members get a discount at our Pasadena store!⁠

Norton Simon Museum ⁠
This is an excellent art museum here in Pasadena with numerous sculptures on it's grounds. Their collection of European paintings and sculpture spans the Renaissance to the 20th century.⁠

Huntington Gardens ⁠
With 130 acres, these sprawling botanical gardens are a great place to do some plein air artwork. They have a map of what's currently in bloom February! The Huntington Library and Art Museum are an added bonus. ⁠

Just up the street on Vermont Ave, Skylight has two shops - a regular book store and two doors down they have the Art Annex! Both are fantastic, but we find ourselves at the annex more often since they're got a great collection of books about artists, on making art, and tons of rad zines.⁠

This park is so close to us making it a perfect spot to do some plein air art - there are wonderful views of Griffith Observatory and the Hollywood sign. It's also where Barnsdall Art Center is located hosting classes for both kids and adults.⁠

We hosted Peter Han's Dynamic Sketching class last fall and we're so happy to announce that we're doing it again! The past class went great, so we're extending this class to be a total of eight weeks long.⁠

In case you're not familiar, the Dynamic Sketching method is an approach to sketching that builds confidence and a strong ability to retain a visual library. Peter Has been teaching this technique for over 10 years which was established at the Artcenter College in Pasadena. With over 15 years of industry experience, Peter will elaborate on the importance of this foundation that all artists/designers use as a standard.⁠

This is an 8 week course, beginning Feb 18th going till April 8th. There will be 5-6 classes held at our Pasadena store and 2-3 of the classes will be on location. Each class will be held on a Saturday from 11-2pm. ⁠

Our witchy manager over in our Pasadena store, Farrah, has made a fresh batch of spell candles for both our stores. Farrah made this run of candles with the spooky season in mind, perfect for any renewing fall rituals or reconnecting with yourself or the full moon. She takes the time to cleanse each candle, impress them with intention, and dress them using a unique blend of blessed oils, herbs, and flowers.⁠

We are very sad to learn of the passing of Doc Guthrie.
Doc is probably best known for his instrumental role in creating and running LA Trade Tech’s world renowned sign painting program. Specializing in traditional methods practiced and passed down since the early 20th century, Doc’s program has become known for not only producing talented professional craftspeople, but for it’s place at the center of the growing national cultural interest in traditional hand painted sign craft.
Along with his many artistic and professional achievements, Doc will be remembered for the many people he touched as teacher, mentor, and friend. His honest, funny, f**k you attitude always made me feel right at home. I know I’m not the only one.
RIP Doc ❤️
