outrageous Halloween spice at Edendale today 🐸🐸🎃🎃
Join artist and educator Roxana Rivera and NAMI Glendale at the Edendale Library on Saturday, November 2nd to appreciate the lives of the people who matter most to you. Día de los Mu***os is a time to appreciate the special qualities of someone who is no longer with us, their habits, comforts and unique qualities that they brought to this world. When we honor the dead together, we honor not just those who have passed on, but also this river of life that we all share.
Roxana will guide us in crafting mini-ofrendas for people who have meant something to us and are no longer with us, whether it’s your grandfather who fished at the pier mostly catching sardines, or your best friend who loved to barbeque, or even a well-known athlete, musician or public figure who influenced you in a positive way. Think about their habits, special traits and the things they loved and what they represented to you. What food and drink did they love? What clothes did they wear? What was their favorite color, sports team or song lyrics? What brought them comfort that would welcome them into this ofrenda?
Halloween is coming... get in the mood with these SPOOKY SELECTIONS and/or FRIGHTFUL FAVES !!! 💀💀📚

Join us for a screening of the music documentary Sidelining the Sidemen (and Women), followed by a Q&A with director William Roper, at the Edendale Library on Monday October 21st at 6:00 p.m..
Roper’s film examines the history of racial discrimination in the Los Angeles movie soundtrack industry. Four African American musicians (Susan Chatman, Joseph Mitchell, Robin Ross and Nolan Shaheed) relate their stories of creating careers in the highly competitive and cutthroat environment of the Hollywood scoring stage. Elder musician Bobby Bradford relates anecdotes of Los Angeles at the time that the Negro and white musicians’ unions amalgamated into the single AFM Musicians Local 47.
William Roper is a multidisciplinary artist who plays tuba and other instruments, in musical environments from orchestras to small free improvising ensembles. He has toured the world as both a soloist and an ensemble player, and has been featured on over 60 recordings.

Thanks to everyone who joined us today to share photos and stories of the Echo Park lake restoration with Kevin Kuzma and Gary Leonard! Lovely getting to welcome in so many enthusiastic community members, we had a great conversation. Thanks to for organizing the program, and Gary for all the fascinating photos and artifacts!! 📷
Legendary L.A. photographer Gary Leonard joins local historian Kevin Kuzma from the Echo Park Historical Society to discuss the Echo Park Lake revitalization of 2011-2013 at the Edendale Library!
An iconic symbol of our city, Echo Park Lake has been at the center of Los Angeles history for over 150 years. Originally developed in the 1860s as a reservoir for drinking water, the city turned the lake and its surroundings into a recreational park in the 1890s. After a hundred years of canoeing, picnicking and urban growth, by the early 2000s the lake was polluted, choked with algae, and ready for a major upgrade. It was closed off and drained in 2011 – the lakebed was improved, and walking paths, lighting, and new plants and trees were installed. The grand reopening in 2013 was hailed as a fabulous restoration of one of our finest parks, with wetlands added to filter the water and restore the lake’s role as a functioning part of the surrounding watershed.
Gary Leonard photographed the two-year revitalization process, and was able to explore the drained lakebed, from which he retrieved some fascinating historical artifacts. Local historian and craftsman Kevin Kuzma from the Echo Park Historical Society and Gary present a conversation and a look back at this momentous project. Join us Saturday October 5th at 11:30 a.m. in the library meeting room to share Gary’s photos, hear the stories, and see some of the artifacts that were found when the lake was drained.
