What Is Hollywood's "China Problem?" 06/19/2023

For a while, everyone in the industry talked of China as a great savior. Some companies relied on it more than others, although almost all relied admittedly too much. Here, we go over this less publicized financial aspect of the industry.

What Is Hollywood's "China Problem?" Hollywood is clearly going through some serious convulsions in terms of the studios' profitability. Much of it is attributed to the overblown enthusiasm for ...

A Plea to Hollywood After ‘80 for Brady’ Scores: Make More Fun Movies for Women! 02/06/2023

Given that since the start of the industry, the most likely frequent viewers of movies has remained steadfast at females 35+ the performance of this film should not have been a surprise. In fact, the refusal to make traditional A pictures (emotionally oriented stories that are humanist based rather than CGI based) seems like a misperception gone awry with people who should know better believing their own PR.

A Plea to Hollywood After ‘80 for Brady’ Scores: Make More Fun Movies for Women! What will it take to get older crowds back to movie theaters? It’s a question that’s been worrying the industry since the early days of the pandemic. Apparently, the answer is simple: u…

Showtime Removes ‘American Gigolo,’ ‘Let the Right One In’ and Several Other Series From Streaming Service 01/31/2023

The business realities of program costs vs. ultimate ability to make a profit are (finally) coming to the world of streaming. Spending large amounts on a familiar title (for older viewers) that won't have enough episodes for eventual reruns means the resulting show is a dead asset. As for the shows removed from the platform, expect a reappearance on Netflix or Amazon sooner rather than later.

Showtime Removes ‘American Gigolo,’ ‘Let the Right One In’ and Several Other Series From Streaming Service Showtime has pulled several series from its streaming platform, becoming the latest banner to parse down its digital library in the past year. Sources close to the situation share that most removed…

Netflix Q4 Preview: Ad Tier Drove Highest U.S. Sign-Up Rate in Nearly Three Years, Study Finds 01/19/2023

Q4 for 2022 should be very interesting for Netflix. The first two quarters of 2022 were highly problematic, with the service losing customers. An enormous pivot happened (Reed Hastings is definitely entrepreneurial rather than corporate at heart) and the company seems to have turned around. Stay tuned for the Q4, but I anticipate overall bullish news.

Netflix Unveils ‘Murder Mystery 2,’ Zack Snyder’s ‘Rebel Moon’ Footage in 2023 Movie Preview 01/18/2023

Even though it is not saying it directly, here are the net results of Netflix' pivot to better returns. Q1 and S2 of 2022 were terrible, followed by a highly positive Q3. This is based on watching what they are making, licensing rather than making originals, and going after legacy -- and cheap -- programming to fill out their diverse content.

Netflix Unveils ‘Murder Mystery 2,’ Zack Snyder’s ‘Rebel Moon’ Footage in 2023 Movie Preview Netflix has unveiled its 2023 movie preview, which includes Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler’s whodunit sequel “Murder Mystery 2,” Zack Snyder’s space epic “Rebel Moo…

Ousted Disney CEO Bob Chapek Paid $24.2 Million in 2022 01/17/2023

Given what may have been going on allegedly behind the scenes, that's quite a nice package for someone who was only allowed to run the company without Iger on the Board for approximately 11 months. More drama incoming as it looks like a proxy war is brewing at Disney.

Ousted Disney CEO Bob Chapek Paid $24.2 Million in 2022 Bob Chapek, who was fired as CEO by Disney last fall, received a pay package worth $24.18 million for 2022 and was set to receive a severance package worth more than $20 million after he was let go…

Hollywood’s Next Reckoning: Studios Get Real About Runaway Spending on Streaming 01/16/2023

Our Story

IDEAS was originally a program developed by the California Community College Chancellor’s Office Department of Economic and Workforce Development in 2002. It originally provided workshops for entertainment industry incumbent workers (generally from unions) in digital media skills.

In 2010, the Entertainment Industry Training Collaborative joined with IDEAS to continue providing incumbent worker training, but with vastly increased funding. In an arrangement with Contract Services Administration Training Trust Fund (the multi-local that also provides “safety passports”) for its members to ensure set safety. During the three years of this grant, over 2,000 industry workers were funded for advanced technical training beyond the scope of its usual services.

From 2013-2018, it was the home for the 19 community colleges in the Los Angeles Region and the 9 colleges in Orange County to post news, links, announcements, special events, etc. that were happening on their campuses. During that time, it hosted numerous workshops including boot camps, curriculum development, high school events, development of new curriculum, and more.

During those five years, IDEAS created nearly 200 digital video assets that may be used in classrooms, workshops, and at Workforce Development facilities. Broken into specific channels based on the occupation, each video features an interview with questions from an industry “newbie” (usually a former community college student just entering the workforce) to an industry pro who has been in the industry for multiple years. The careers covered are mostly below-the-line (crafts) and front office positions to give students a broad sense of all the jobs available. They may be found on individual playlists at the Sensei Dan W Channel on YouTube
