The 4-day AVS Festival is held concurrently with the Primrose International Viola Competition, one of the most renowned string instrument competitions in the world, featuring the world’s best and most promising young violists. The Competition will offer southern California one week of exceptional international competition, exquisite music and an exhilarating finish, with live rounds on the Colburn School campus, including artists such as Jessica Meyer, Tatjana Masurenko, Atar Arad, Ayane Kozasa, Steven Dann, and Cathy Basrak, plus over eighty other performers and presented selected through the proposal submission or competition preliminary rounds.

We are thrilled to announce new leadership of the Trudl Zipper Dance Institute! Janie Taylor, noted dancer, teacher, choreographer, and member of L.A. Dance Project, has been named Artistic Director of the Trudl Zipper Dance Institute for the 2024-25 school year. She will partner with longtime TZDI staff member Gavin Kelley, who will serve as Interim Administrative Director. Janie has a deep commitment to dance in LA and has been affiliated with Colburn since 2016, both as a faculty member and a visiting artist. Welcome Janie!

A tenacious young artist with a passion that enraptures his audience in every performance, Pouliot has established himself as “one of those special talents that comes along once in a lifetime” (Toronto Star).

Born in Colombo, Sri Lanka, Steinway Artist Rohan De Silva has lead a formidable career as a highly sought after collaborative pianist and chamber musician. Among De Silva’s awards are the best accompanist special prize at the ninth International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow.

At the end of this school year, the Trudl Zipper Dance Institute will say farewell to Dean Margaret Tracey as she departs to become Artistic Director of Canada’s National Ballet School. In a message to the Colburn community, she wrote “Last summer I was so excited to come to LA and lead this vibrant team and build upon the vision of my predecessors. The joy I have found working with passionate and dedicated educators at Colburn will stay with me forever. While my time here has been all too brief, I am continually reminded of the impactful work being done to transform lives through the arts. I am eternally grateful to have been so warmly welcomed by the staff, faculty, and students who make up this special community of artist changemakers!” Thank you, Margaret, for your many contributions to Colburn over the past year. We wish you well in your new role and know you will continue to make an extraordinary impact on dance education!

We are so excited to welcome our 2024 Fortissima Fellows from around the country in the next few days for a week-long residential intensive on campus! Colburn’s Fortissima program is designed to inspire, equip, and empower female-identifying high school musicians from underrepresented minorities in classical music to pursue professional training and careers in the classical music field. Fellows work with Music Director Jannina Norpoth, Grammy-nominated violinist of PUBLIQuartet, and receive one-on-one mentorship throughout the 6-month program. Meet our incredible 2024 mentors: Titilayo Ayangade, cellist of Duo Kayo and recent recipient of a Chamber Music America Artistic Projects grant; Chanell Crichlow, composer, and multi-instrumentalist who has written music for documentaries, film, podcasts, and composed the the 2024 WNCAA (March Madness) Tournament Theme for ESPN; Karla Donehew Perez, founding member of the GRAMMY-winning Catalyst Quartet violinist; and recording artist and soloing member of Beyoncé’s band Lady Jess.
