When you buy products from small businesses you should know a few important things.
1) your business is appreciated. We know that there are other options. We know that while we are always competitively priced there will always be times we simply can’t match the bottom line price of Amazon or a mail order super warehouse.
2) remember why you chose to do your business with a small business. You came to that business because you wanted to be treated like an individual. You wanted to be remembered by first name. And you wanted to be treated like you were just as important as the biggest customer even when buying one or two small pieces.
3) what you might give up in a little pricing, you gain in individual service. Do you have the cell phone number of the order taker at Amazon, at jegs, at summit? Will they answer a question on a Friday night at 11:00pm? Will they get out of bed at 2:00am and meet you at the shop for that one last fitting that means the difference between making the next race or not?
4) when you don’t pay your bill on time, small businesses feel it. We don’t have money in reserve, your payment goes to pay the vendor that supplied that small business the products to fulfill your order.
5) offering “terms” is something we do because there is an industry expectation. We prefer you pay for your products when you receive them or when you order something that is not regularly in inventory. So, when you are offered “terms” net 15 doesn’t actually mean net “whenever it’s convenient”. Your non payment means less product on hand and the potential loss of the next customer.
6) the last thing we want to do is chase down money. It creates conflict with the very customers that make us the great company we are. Asking for an update on payment for product you’ve already received is not our bad, you are responsible for your bills. If you can’t pay, have the courtesy to respond, with the truth, we don’t send people to collections we want to keep your business, just be up front. Allow us to work with you.
7) expertise, you came to a small business because you wanted someone to help you create, refine, or resolve a project. If you knew exactly what you were going to need it would make sense for you to simply order it from the least expensive source.
