Shedding some ‘Big Salty Tears’ today upon hearing the news about the passing of Bert Susanka.

Back in the early 90’s when we first met Sublime and Skunk Records we encountered the oddball mayhem of The Ziggens. A band of brothers (not necessarily blood related but all sharing the last name “Ziggen,” this zany 4 piece graced many stages opening for Bradley & Co long before Sublime’s national success.

The Ziggens were the label counterpart to Sublime on Skunk and played their own brand of comical surf inspired rock n roll unlike anything in the typical ska-punk and reggae sound starting to permeate the Orange County scene that spawned Sublime and No Doubt amongst many others. Looking like a gang of misfits from an Elks Lodge meeting and led by their colorful leader Bert Susanka, this Buena Park, CA collective left an indelible mark on our Southern California music subculture.

The brilliant inclusion of the bands name on Sublime’s song ‘Greatest Hits’ beckoned the call to the “Ziggens Greatest Hits,” a nod of recognition by Brad and the boys to the creativity and influence of The Ziggens songwriting. While not reaching a gargantuan level of success as the other band on Skunk Records, The Ziggens touched those close to this burgeoning underground with a style and sound that none of us standing on that stage will ever forget. Compilations such as ‘All the fun that we missed’, ‘San Clemente’, ‘Something About A Waitress’, ‘Rincon,’ ‘Big Salty Tears,’ ‘Call it Quits,’ ‘Ride the Wild Surf,’ and so many countless others are classics to be heard on your vintage vinyl record player for years to come.

RIP Bert we love you thanks for being a true original and for all the fun we missed we will always cherish the inspiring music and memories, you are a permanent isotope in the musical DNA that shaped our future and you’ll always be remembered in our hearts as “Rusty Never Sleeps.”

Our deepest condolences to friends and fam Bert is a true legend 🙏❤️🎸💂‍♂️
