The 2024 Tenure Project, hosted by USC Marshall, is in full swing. The annual conference provides programs and workshops to help junior faculty navigate the complex tenure track in U.S. business schools while addressing important issues affecting Black, Latinx, and Native faculty.
“What is exciting about Marshall hosting the conference is that we have senior faculty members from each of our tenure-granting departments working to design and plan the sessions as well as incredible support from Dean Geoff Garrett for our goals for the conference,” said Sarah Townsend, vice dean of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
The Dean's Panel, an event highlight, featured esteemed deans Geoffrey Garrett of USC Marshall, Frank Hodge of University of Washington Foster School of Business, and Ian O. Williamson of University of California, Irvine Paul Mirage School of Business.

Andrew Call will be the new dean of USC Leventhal School of Accounting at USC Marshall starting September 1.
Call is joining USC from W. P. Carey School of Business - ASU. Since becoming director of the school of accountancy in 2018, Call recruited and retained the most top research and teaching professors in the school’s history.
“Andy’s career has been remarkable. He is a distinguished scholar, an award-winning teacher, and a proven, collaborative leader,” said Geoffrey Garrett, dean of USC Marshall School of Business. “As a champion of faculty, staff, students, and a dynamic academic culture, he is perfectly positioned to lead Leventhal to even greater heights as a global leader in accounting education, research, and thought leadership.”

Nathanael Fast, director of Neely Center for Ethical Leadership and Decision Making heads to DC to participate in America in One Room: The Youth Vote, a four-day conference that brings together 500 first-time voters from across the country to deliberate key policy issues facing the nation.
“Ethical leadership is so critical right now, not only to address polarization but to meet the challenges and opportunities of future-shaping technologies like AI,” Fast said. “Our goal with this event is to ensure that Gen Z participants are informed about the important challenges our nation is facing as well as have the skills to go out and engage their communities.”
Along with the Neely Center, conference partners include: Close Up Foundation, Helena, The Generation Lab, and Stanford Deliberative Democracy Lab.

In a field experiment, Melody Chang, assistant professor of Management and Organization, measured the likelihood of receiving a job interview for three different profiles: a founder of a successful venture, founder of a failed venture, and a non-founder with identical education, work experience, and skills. She found that the non-founder was the most preferred, followed by the failed founder. Recruiters valued fit and commitment more highly than a founder’s innovative capabilities.

USC Marshall’s Master of Science Social Entrepreneurship (MSSE) program celebrated its 10th anniversary and debuted the MSSE Impact of the Decade award to recognize its alumni entrepreneurs.
The 2024 recipients were Laura Hertz, MSSE ’16 and co-founder of Gifts for Good®, and Alejandra Revueltas, MSSE ’17, a senior portfolio officer at impact investing firm Deetken Impact. Congratulations!

Assistant Professor Courtney Brunious led students to Tokyo where they enjoyed a rare opportunity to meet with executives at Nissan, Panasonic, and Kikkoman.
“Ultimately, it’s about understanding how business doesn’t just operate the way you see it here in the U.S.,” Brunious explains. “Business in Europe, business in the Middle East, business in Asia — there are different things that you need to understand in order to be successful.”

“He’s hands-down the best professor I’ve had in undergrad,” said Hilal Balik MS ’25, who took Management of Small Businesses (BAEP 423) with Fox and was inspired to switch to Marshall.
Beyond the classroom, Fox's research on the entrepreneurial mindset and gratitude provides student founders the human-centered tools they need to successfully launch their ventures.

On June 21, the inaugural cohort of the Neely Ethics and Technology Fellows Program presented their research in immersive technology along with industry experts and insiders. The fellows investigated the positive and negative impacts of AR, VR, and mixed reality on areas such as fashion, gaming, healthcare, and advertising.
“[Immersive Technology] has been around for a long time, and we’ve gone through many cycles of hype and excitement,” said Nathanael Fast, director of the Neely Center. “But each time we go through a cycle, the technology is getting better and better … We remain very excited about the potential for societal benefit from extended reality, virtual and augmented reality, and spatial computing.”
