Besides our celebration of independence, July has brought us another Outstanding Neighbor. Norwood "Woody" and Jean Miller. He is always saying hi to the neighbors, sitting on his front steps to play with neighbors' kids. Tries to connect needy people and organizations by asking for help from neighbors. Deeply cares about kindness to others. They are both genuinely authentic people who smile and wish well for everyone. They will look out for neighbors' homes when they are on vacation. Randomly drops flowers from his garden, small gifts and trinkets that she crochets, etc. Woody and Jean have lived in their Fairlawn home since 1986 and always try to meet and get to know each of their neighbors.

Do you have an outstanding neighbor, nominate them here. https://www.stmatthewsky.gov/outstanding-neighbor/

Remember the storms over Memorial Day weekend, without this Outstanding Neighbor someone would be missing their dogs. Immediately after the storms, Kent was out clearing sticks and branches that had fallen in the street. During this time, he rescued two dogs which had gotten out of their yard and were running in the street. He was able to return them safely to their dog sitter. Thank you, Kent!

Mom and Son Team Launch the Rain Stop Project to Serve TARC Passengers in St. Matthews

In a heartwarming display of community spirit and ingenuity, a mother and son duo have developed a community service initiative called the Rain Stop Project. This project, spearheaded by Jena Walker and her son Ethan, a rising junior at Trinity High School, aims to provide shelter for TARC passengers caught in the rain.

Over the past five years, Jena and Ethan have been diligently collecting gently used umbrellas. Their efforts have culminated in the creation of umbrella houses, which are now installed at three uncovered TARC stops in St. Matthews. These umbrella houses, fabricated with the help of local craftsman Troy Meidinger who transformed donated traffic drums into protective structures, offer a convenient and thoughtful solution for passengers during unexpected downpours.

The Rain Stop Project has been a collaborative effort, working closely with TARC and the Council Members of the City of St. Matthews to secure placement approval. The project has also enjoyed robust support from local businesses such as Rainbow Blossom stores, YMCA, Southeast Christian Church, HighNote, and Highway Safety Services, Inc. Their contributions have been invaluable in bringing this vision to life.

The agreement between the Rain Stop Project and TARC is to maintain these umbrella houses for one year. After this period, the hope is that a local business will step in to continue the tradition of donating umbrellas, ensuring that TARC passengers will always have access to this thoughtful resource. There are currently 3 locations. 2 of the stops are on Thierman Lane, and the other stop is on Dupont Circle.

The inspiration for the Rain Stop Project began years ago when Jena Walker attended a Metro United Way event and learned about the challenges faced by public transportation users. This insight sparked the idea, which has since grown into a full-fledged community initiative thanks to the dedication of Jena, Ethan, and their supportive partners.

Folks interested in donating new and gently used compact umbrellas to The Rain Stop Project can drop them off at Rainbow Blossom in St Matthews - 3738 Lexington Rd. There will be collection bins there in August and September.

For more information about the Rain Stop Project or to find out how you can contribute, please contact Jena Walker at [email protected] or 502-558-9868.

About the Rain Stop Project:
The Rain Stop Project is a community service initiative focused on providing gently used umbrellas for passengers at uncovered TARC stops. Founded by Jena Walker and her son Ethan, the project aims to enhance the public transportation experience and foster community spirit through practical support and local collaboration.

Meet your May Outstanding Neighbor! Dr. Eileen Haeberle is an integral part of our neighborhood. She is one of those people that will stop and talk to you in the middle of the street and strike up a great conversation and friendship. There are many people like that but Eileen definitely stands out as someone that cares . Eileen has a heart for older animals and in their new home being remodeled just two blocks from Grandview, she’s creating a separate space for these older doggies. Eileen is a staple of Saint Matthews. She is a dentist near Dupont, she grew up around this area and her husband and she are well-known on Grandview as wonderful people. They are real people. They are wonderful friends of mine and it really stuck out to me when I learned of this neighbor award that Eileen is deserving. She is the type of person that would definitely cook a meal for you, donate or help with something for you or help with anything that’s needed. She has a wonderful heart and I feel like people like her should be recognized.
