Our VP for this year is Sarah Kannel!
“My name is Sarah Kannel and I am VP for NLG and President of BLSA! I was born and raised in Long Beach, California and moved to Texas to attend TTU Law. I hope to practice criminal defense when I graduate. I love music, books, artwork, and have recently gotten into gardening. I hope you all join NLG! It’s the org to be in if you’re at all interested in social justice lawyering. I look forward to meeting you all!”
Last but certainly not least, we have Jessy Lieck, our president.
“My name is Jessy Lieck (she/ her). I am a 3L. I have served on the NLG executive board since its founding, last year as Outreach & Development Coordinator and this year as President. I am originally from Austin, Texas. I attended Texas State University where I received my B.A. in Political Science. I am currently in the Criminal Defense Clinic and am completing the Criminal Law & Innocence degree concentration. I plan on practicing criminal defense upon graduation."
Next up we have Justice Barkman, our treasurer!
“I’m Justice Ross Barkman and I am honored to serve again as the Treasurer of Tech NLG. My pronouns are he/him. I’m from Cleburne, Texas and got my Bachelor’s Degree in History from Angelo State University. I’m interested in criminal defense, largely because my father decided to name me Justice and because I want to advocate for people who need it most.”
Introducing our secretary, Pamela Gandy!
“Hello! My name is Pamela Gandy and my pronouns are she/her. I'm excited to serve as the secretary for Tech NLG this year. I'm from Laramie, Wyoming and went to undergrad at Texas Tech University where I studied public relations and political science. I can't wait to get to know you all this year!”
Next up is our outreach and development coordinator, Cat Clopton!
“Hey y’all! I’m Cat Clopton (they/them), NLG’s Outreach and Development Coordinator for this year. Lubbock is my hometown though I went to UNT for undergrad where I got my B.A. in political science and B.S. in sociology. For fun, I like to play strategic card and board games and have recently really gotten into cooking. My cats Spinach and Blueberry are a big part of my life and they are the best cuddle buddies. I’m so excited to be part of NLG’s executive board for another year!”
Next up on our officer introductions we have our National Liaison, Abby Keese!
“My name is Abby Keese and my pronouns are she/her. For my undergrad degree I got a B.S. in Hospitality Management at Texas Tech. My hometown is Grand Prairie, TX. Here are a couple of fun facts about me: I have a cat named Edora who I adopted last month. I also once won an award for most likely to miss her own wedding for a concert and I consider it one of my proudest accomplishments!”
Come join us next Thursday to learn about Tech Law’s organization for progressive law students!
To start off officer introductions we have Hunter Nasato!
“My name is Hunter Nasato and I use she/her pronouns. I grew up in Leander, Texas and received my Bachelors in Human Sciences from Texas Tech University in 2020. After graduation, I worked as a Domestic Violence Victim Advocate for a year before attending law school. I am currently a law clerk at Legal Aid Society of Lubbock, where I primarily work on family law cases involving victims of domestic violence. In addition to serving on the board of NLG, I am a staff member on Volume 55 of the Texas Tech Law Review. I am passionate about trauma-informed advocacy and hope to practice family law, as well as juvenile and adult criminal defense in the future. Outside of school, I am probably chasing my three dogs around or watching a drag show at Rewind!”

GRITS is a student-run, public interest law conference that focuses on the difficulties and constraints inherent to social justice work in the South, an the unique strategies that legal practitioners and other public interest workers have developed to meet those needs. The conference emphasizes innovative, progressive, and even radical approaches to building community among students, practitioners, and community activists in the South to bring about social change. The conference is an opportunity for law students, lawyers, and activists to build coalitions, share strategies for progressive lawyering, and develop new approaches for the future.
This year's conference will take place online via Zoom throughout the week of February 14-19. Go to gritsconference.org to learn more!
