This conference will be hosted in the new TTU-DFW Site at 4201 State Highway 161, Irving TX 75038.

This new Texas Tech facility is located minutes from the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. All conference activities will take place at this location to include a welcome reception on Thursday evening April 11 and all conference sessions and meals on Friday and Saturday, April 12 and 13. At this time, there is no specific conference hotel designated for this event.

While we are not able to arrange a block of guest rooms at a specific hotel, VNCA/IPAC faculty and staff will be staying at the following location:

So, just what WAS in all those pockets of a pilot's survival vest?

At one of our annual education events for Veterans Day at a local elementary school, we pull out one of the helicopters (either the Huey UH-1 or the Cobra AH-1) for an education station outside, and at the indoor station we display related items and talk about what helicopter pilots would wear. We have been asked by many young students: What did they carry in the pockets of the survival vest?

To answer that question, I pulled a set of survival kit items from the shelves upstairs, made a list, took photos, and now include that information in the presentation. It's a varied and extensive array of items* in small quantities and compact packaging, covering a wide range of potential needs. While the U.S. Army's "Survival Evasion and Escape" field manual is a comprehensive 431 pages, the survival kit makers were insightful enough to include a thin plastic sheet which is both useful and printed with survival tips, should you find yourself in an I-need-to-know-it-now situation while you waited for Search and Rescue (SAR).

Thank you to all of the veterans who brought these items home and then donated them to VNCA so we can share them with everyone who will listen, in person and online!

*As our veterans will know, there is one additional item that is not included in the photo or list of survival kit items, as these education tools are intended for use with young students, Then (and now) the military survival kit also includes a condom which, in addition to being compact, is also strong and flexible enough to hold a liter of water, as well as many other survival uses such as a glove, foot protection, fishing float, keeping kindling dry, fire starter, wound or burn protection, etc.

Operation Little Lift was initiated by WO-3 William Powers, 273rd Aviation Company, Civic Action Officer, through weekly visits to the An Phuong Orphanage in Vung Tau. WO-3 Powers discussed the project with Father Que, head Priest of the orphanage.
The orphans from throughout the Mekong Delta, and along the Cambodia border, have been living under constant threat of the Viet Cong (VC) recruiters and kidnappers. The children were transported by water to Vinh Long and brought to Vung Tau aboard a CH-47 Chinook helicopter and a CH-54 Flying Crane (this is the only "People Pod" being utilized by the U.S. Army at present.)
The airlift was made by the 147th Aviation Support Helicopter Company and the 273rd Heavy Crane Company. Both companies are under the support of the 22nd Combat Support Battalion.
The footage depicts elements of the 53rd General Support Group aiding in the transportation of approx 65 Vietnamese children (orphans).

Public health is a top priority at any time. Add the extra burdens of war on top of typical struggles for reliable access to clean water, adequate food, stable housing, and medical care, and it becomes critical. Both deficiency diseases and communicable diseases become an incredible daily challenge for civilians, and is felt by the entire medical support system, including military service members. Diseases which might have been under control in a peace-time environment, can quickly become a public health hazard during war, as demonstrated by these entries from the January 1966 Health Data Publications (No. 5, Revised) from the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research:

MALARIA remans among the greatest causes of morbidity in South Viet-Nam. Malaria eradication campaigns had resulted n lowering the incidence around Saigon and the coastal areas to the north of Saigon. However, the present war has completely altered the picture....TUBERCULOSIS rivals malaria and enteric diseases a a cause of incapacitation and death. The WHO and UNICEF organizations are assisting in the development of diagnostic and treatment facilities and vaccination programs...Until 1962, BUBONIC PLAGUE was confined to a few localized and sporadic cases. However, during the last 3 years the incidence of plague has risen alarmingly and established in countless new foci not only in the highlands but in other areas a well...There are approximately 15,000 cases of LEPROSY in South Viet-Nam. Many cases are unknown and unrecognized. Leprosaria are located in the south and in the mountains, and treatment of ambulatory registered lepers is provided. However, the present program is inadequate...

Vietnamization or de-Americanization are terms used to describe joint American and Vietnamese efforts to shift more responsibility for the war effort in South Vietnam from the United States to the Republic of Vietnam. Those efforts allowed the U.S. to gradually withdraw combat troops while building up the South Vietnamese military to be more capable and self-sufficient.

The removal of U.S. troops and units began in 1969 and continued until the last U.S. combat unit left in March 1973. During those years, the U.S. also progressively expanded its military advisory efforts, greatly enhancing their training of South Vietnamese military forces, while transferring military aircraft, vehicles, weapons, equipment, and facilities to Republic of Vietnam control. That transfer of materiel and the enhanced advisory effort ended in 1973, as well.

John Haseman served two tours (2-1/2 years) in Vietnam. For his first tour (Nov 1967-Nov 1968), then-Captain Haseman was Commander (Forward) of the 9th Military Intelligence Detachment, 9th Infantry Division, and was stationed at Bearcat, D**g Tam, and My Tho. During his second tour (June 1971-Feb 1973) he was with Advisory Team 88 (Kien Hoa Province in the Mekong Delta) as the Deputy District Senior Adviser (DDSA) in Ham Long District. After 10 months he was reassigned as DDSA to Mo Cay District. Following his service in Vietnam he was with Detachment K, 500th Military Intelligence Group, in Bangkok and Udorn, Thailand. He retired from military service in January 1995.

When a Vietnamese Ally Was Wounded, Two American Soldiers Had to Choose Obedience or Compassion There was a time when U.S. helicopters were forbidden from rescuing wounded South Vietnamese soldiers.

Information Request:
My purpose in approaching you is to try and establish how I was recognized or recorded in US Army records while serving as the Australian Liaison Officer with HQ Saigon Support Command.

I served with the Australian Army in Vietnam, as a Captain, between January and October 1969. I served for most of that year as the Australian Liaison Officer with the Headquarters of Saigon Support Command Long Binh. I worked in the Security, Plans and Operations (SP&O) Section. I received rations and quarters and in almost every way was treated the same as the US Army staff in the headquarters.

Australian Army records do not show my status (eg: seconded, attached etc) while at Long Binh, merely listing me as “located at”.

The Robert Branson Collection (3338) has been processed and is available for research. On his first tour, Major Robert Branson served as MACV Advisor to the ARVN 21st Combat Assistance Team at Bac Lieu (November 1968 to October 1969). He later served at Ke Sach as District Senior Advisor (July 1971 to January 1973), and as a member of the Four Power Joint Military Commission (January to April 1973).

VNCA Salutes Women Vietnam Veterans

An estimated 10,000+ American women served in Vietnam. Most of these were nurses (primarily with the Army, as well as Navy and Air Force) -- the Army even had a recruitment campaign for women nurses, which they named Operation Nightingale.

Military women also served in support roles, such as intelligence, supply, signal, etc. All women who served were volunteers. The names of eight U.S. servicewomen are inscribed on the National Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC.

Women's service (along with other minority groups and support positions) is underrepresented in the materials being donated to VNCA projects. Please consider documenting your experience in the Vietnam War with an oral history or materials to represent your personal service.

50 years later: Two Texas Tech directors reflect on Vietnam War, legacy Two Texas Tech directors were able to attend the 50th year commemoration of the end of Vietnam War and reflect on it's history and legacy.

VNCA Brings Vietnam War History Closer for Local 5th Graders

On May 4, VNCA's Reference and Outreach/Education Archivist (Sheon Montgomery) took era artifacts from our collections to a local school for a show-and-tell event with 4 classes of 5th graders. The focus was on items and equipment used by U.S. servicemen (1 table), Vietnamese cultural and Viet Cong items (1 table) and a third table with "touchable" materials from the VNCA Education Collection, along with 3 informative posters. All materials were briefly presented and described for function and context, and then students had time to visit the tables and ask questions.

The 73 students were well prepared and actively interested in all of the materials. Prior to the visit teachers introduced the basic history of the Vietnam War, and provided context for "what does an archive do?" by showng VNCA's short video on Archives Research 101 on our YouTube page: https://www.youtube.com/vietnamttu

For the first time, to get a better sense of the educational impact of the visit, the teachers followed up with a short survey to see what the students learned and what they valued from the experience. A sample of the responses is below, but the bottom line is that seeing and hearing about the era items helped build a connection between the classroom instruction and the veterans who shared their personal items, and an awareness of the archive for preserving and sharing these materials and information.

Something that I learned about the Vietnam War was:
 every piece of clothing was died [dyed] green.
 they had flash cards that inform you about the plants you can and can't eat.
 one helicopter could carry another helicopter at one time.
 many of the women during the war actually had jobs within the war.
 soldiers had to be sure to pick up every little thing otherwise the Vietnamese soldiers will use that.
 all money [MPC] was paper and 10 bill would be 10 cents.
 people that served in the vietnam war had gotten specific awards for serving in it.
 [pilots] had to multitask using the [flight] computer when they were flying.

What role do archives have on the preservation of history?
 you can actually see and touch things that came from history
 helping teach what has happened to others
 keeping the memory and story of those people who had been involved
 they can show things hard for someone to say and show how things were and the difficulty
 show cool stuff from the past
 we can study with our eyes and learn more
 they show the struggle and hard work
 making sure other people learn about important stuff in history
 we must cherish these items for they belong to one of many soldiers who risk there lives for our community
 if you didn't come [today] we wouldn't know as much as we do now

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) - 50 years ago in January 1973, the Paris Peace Treaty was signed. Two months later on march 29, the last of the United States combat troops were pulled out of Vietnam, though full U.S. military involvement didn’t end until 1975. With the exception of the U.S. National Archives, The Southwest Collections and the Special Collections Library on Texas Tech’s campus holds the largest archive collection on the Vietnam war.

Transcription Improves Access at the Sam Johnson Vietnam Archive

With a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, more than 700 hours of video and audio interviews have been transcribed to aid researchers around the world.

Over the last three years, the VNCA has transcribed 185 oral history interviews of veterans, military couples and a recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor, as well as civilians and veterans who protested the war at home. The transcription process makes the interviews word-searchable, which assists individuals looking for specific topics, while also improving access for patrons with hearing disabilities. All the interviews are now freely available in the Virtual Vietnam Archive.

Happy Thanksgiving to 1/4 Cav, 1967

1st Battalion 4th Cavalry at NDP [night defensive position] along Highway 13 between Lai Khe and Chon Thanh. On Thanksgiving Day, the 1st Infantry Division band flew in on a CH-47 Chinook for a morale booster concert. Their helicopter blew down a lot of tents, and people went about putting tents back up as the band marched off and played their concert. Concert completed, the band marched back onto the Chinook and departed, blowing the tents down again in the process.
Ah, well, it's the thought that counts.
