In 1962, César Chávez founded the National Farm Workers Association to provide better working conditions and improved rights for farm workers in California and beyond.. His union would end up joining with the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee, striking against the exploitation of workers by grape growers in California, and the two organizations later merged to become the United Farm Workers.
The UFW was one of the most politically powerful and ethnically diverse labor unions in the U.S. in the 1970s. Dolores Huerta, the leader and cofounder of the UFW, was also the first woman to lead a union like this. The Grape Boycott, which she helped organized, became one of the most significant social justice movements for farm workers in the United States.
As we celebrate and honor National Hispanic Heritage Month, we want to remember the accomplishments and strides that so many Hispanic individuals made for the United States.
