The Dragon Boat Festival, or Duanwu Festival, is a captivating blend of cultural traditions and ancient practices. Celebrated on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month, it marks the height of summer and the peak of yang's force in Chinese astronomy.

One of the festival's intriguing customs involves the use of realgar, a mineral known for its supposed protective properties. Historically, realgar solution was sprinkled around homes as a repellent against snakes and insects. Traditional Chinese medicine regarded realgar as a universal antidote against poison, advocating its use for protection against disease and evil spirits. During the festival, adults would drink huangjiu (yellow wine) mixed with realgar powder, while children wore amulets or had the character 王 ("king") drawn on their foreheads with realgar slurry for protection.

These practices later became intertwined with the legendary story of poet and statesman Qu Yuan (340–278 BC), who drowned himself in a river in protest. According to legend, locals rushed out in boats to save him or preserve his body from fish. A doctor among them cast realgar into the river, drawing out an aquatic dragon which the boatmen then killed.

Given these protective rituals, it's traditional to wish someone "safe and peaceful" during the Dragon Boat Festival, rather than simply "happy." This wish reflects the festival's deep roots in safeguarding health and well-being, along with its vibrant celebrations of culture and community.
