Today on the Figgy Blog ➡️ Navigating Screen Time: The Best Advice and Insight for Modern Parents

In today’s digital age, screen time for children is a very debated topic. Parents are constantly overwhelmed with recommendations and warnings about the potential negative outcomes of excessive screen time. With busy schedules and many distractions, it’s no wonder many parents find it challenging to prioritize these guidelines. While some may feel guilty about the amount of screen time their children get, other parents don’t see immediate consequences and opt for the convenience screens provide. A recent Los Angeles Times article outlines the latest numbers on how much screen time is too much for babies and toddlers and interestingly, many parents of children under eight believe all screen time can be positive, promoting learning and creativity.

Should Children Under 5 Have Screen Time?
The American Academy of Pediatrics has clear guidelines regarding screen time for young children. For babies under 18 months, screens should be avoided altogether. Even up to 24 months, screen time should be heavily limited. This recommendation stems from the understanding that infants’ rapidly developing brains are best nurtured through direct interactions with caregivers and the physical world. 

For children aged 2 to 5, it’s recommended to limit screen time to one hour per day, ideally keeping it away from meals and bedtime. Screens can disrupt the natural rhythms of eating and sleeping, both of which are vital for a child’s health and well-being. 

Lastly and most importantly, screens should not be used as a primary method to calm a child, as this can lead to dependency on devices for emotional regulation. Encouraging alternative calming techniques, such as reading a book together, engaging in a creative activity, or simply spending quality time with a caregiver, can be far more beneficial in the long run.
