This year, Rooted is expanding the growing space we manage at the Anderson Farm County Park in Oregon by 13 acres, which we’re renting by the acre to farmers growing for market. We’re very excited about this, as the growers can use this land as a base of stable land tenure to grow culturally relevant crops and their expanding farm businesses. Pictured here is KO Thao, Community Gardens Network Manager, working on flagging out the plots and paths at the site. Thanks also to Laurie Lambert of Dane County Land and Water Resources Conservation, who also happens to help organize the St Paul Community Garden, for her guidance on practices to conserve the soil quality of the site as the site transitions to mostly vegetables! https://lwrd.danecounty.gov/
The Community Action Coalition, which works alongside Rooted, is surveying the communities they serve through their most recent Community Needs Assessment. We are saying goodbye and good luck to Hawthorn, who is moving on after serving as Rooted's Farm to ECE Manager. While we will miss having Hawthorn on Rooted staff, we are so excited to announce that they have started a position with the National Farm to School Network as a Farm to ECE Program Associate! During their time with Rooted, Hawthorn made a lot of friends within the Farm to ECE and Farm to School community. They also made a lot of beautiful resources! Favorites include Plants Want to Grow and Fresh Produce Recipes for Microwave and Toaster Oven. Hawthorn assisted with the statewide Farm to School/ ECE newsletter, spearheaded Rooted's Roots in the Grounds comprehensive Farm to ECE curriculum, and led many trainings about the benefits--and joy--of incorporating Farm to ECE activities into early care programs. We wish Hawthorn all the best and are thrilled to have them representing Rooted and Wisconsin at the national level!
