The holiday is extra special this year for 44 new citizens who took the oath on Monday. We were honored to attend this naturalization ceremony at partner Centro Hispano. Omar, from Senegal, and Olha, from Ukraine, both attended our Community English class at Nuestro Mundo Community School this spring. In spite of an age gap, cultural differences and limited English skills, the two formed a strong connection through many classes of English. They often sat and practiced together. Olha said one day, "He is my grandson now."

English classes offer opportunities beyond language instruction. Many students in our classes form strong and lasting bonds with their classmates, helping to create a sense of community. Support students building skills and community: litnetwork.org/donate

About Literacy Network

Literacy Network teaches reading, writing, communication and computer skills to Dane County adults so they can achieve financial security, well-being and deeper engagement with their families and the community.

We are a non-profit organization in Madison, WI, made up of teachers, students, tutors, volunteers and donors all working together to improve adult literacy in Dane County. We offer a wide variety of programs to help adults achieve goals specific to their needs: to read to their children or help with homework, to fill out a job application, to understand finances, or speak with a doctor about a health concern.

Our current class schedule can be found here: www.litnetwork.org/uploads/media/LitNetClassSchedule.pdf

Improved literacy skills mean a better chance at safe, productive life and a stronger connection to our community. Literacy Network programs include over a dozen well-attended classes throughout Madison that focus on health literacy, financial literacy, workplace literacy and more, and together with more than 500 volunteer tutors over 1,200 adults are helped each year.

Because of Literacy Network's contributions to the community, Dane County has a better prepared workforce and a diverse, involved population. Adults are better equipped to succeed in the workplace, better understand health issues, and provide supportive environments for the education of their children. Partnerships with other area social service agencies help build even stronger community connections for our program participants.

Interested in volunteering? Tutor just a few hours every week, wherever and whenever is convenient for you. Successful tutors give their learners more than improved literacy skills -they offer the chance for them to gain confidence and improve their connection to the world around them! No teaching experience is needed - training and support are provided.

You can find a regularly updated list of volunteer opportunities here: www.litnetwork.org/volunteer
