One person is killed about every 39 minutes in a drunk-driving crash, totaling more than 13,000 lives lost each year. That's why the Dane County Sheriff's Office will participate in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign. The Sheriff's Office will be joined by law enforcement agencies throughout the state to prevent crashes caused by impaired drivers. Please do your part and drive sober!

Dane County Sheriff Kalvin D. Barrett has emerged as a notable voice in the ongoing criminal justice reform discourse. As a member of the Law Enforcement Leaders to Reduce Crime and Incarceration, Barrett unequivocally aligns himself with a collective of law enforcement professionals, prosecutors, and reform advocates committed to reshaping the criminal justice landscape. This commitment was showcased during his participation in a presentation panel in Washington, DC, where he collaborated with other prominent figures in the field to discuss strategies to enhance the justice system.
At the core of this effort lies an unwavering dedication to the pillars of democracy, a philosophy that prioritizes equal justice and steadfast adherence to the rule of law. Sheriff Barrett and his colleagues are united in their belief that transformative reforms can create a more equitable system that serves the needs of all citizens rather than just a select few. Their goal is to craft and push for reforms that not only reduce incarceration rates but also tackle recidivism through innovative approaches.
Among the critical strategies highlighted in these discussions are Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT), jail diversion programs, and comprehensive programming and social services designed to support individuals during and after their interactions with the justice system. By implementing initiatives like these, law enforcement leaders actively work to ensure that procedural justice translates into real-world outcomes—offering rehabilitation and support instead of mere punishment. Sheriff Barrett’s involvement exemplifies how collaboration between multiple entities can pave the way toward a more just and responsive criminal justice system.
It’s been twelve days since anyone has seen 62-year-old Paul H. Ferrall of Madison. The Dane County Sheriff’s Office asks the public to keep these images of him in mind as they travel around Dane County. He was last seen on Friday, July 19th, in the area of Larry Lane in the Town of Burke. Paul does not have a vehicle but is known to use ride-share apps. He is also known to frequent the downtown area of Madison.
Mr. Ferrall is a white male, approximately 5’11” and 165 lbs. He was last seen wearing blue jeans and a multi-colored sweater. His family is very concerned for his welfare.
The Sheriff’s Office personnel, with the assistance of Madison Police, has been conducting extensive searches near his place of residence, using K9s, drones, ATVs, and people on foot, but there has been no sign of Paul.
If Mr. Ferrall is located, please call 911. If you have any information on his recent whereabouts, call the non-emergency line at the Dane County Communications Center at 608-255-2345.
Here's your friendly reminder: if you receive a call from someone claiming to be a deputy, sergeant, or lieutenant with the DCSO and asking for money, it's a scam!
They commonly tell stories about missing jury duty or having an arrest warrant issued and need to pay a fine to avoid going to jail. There is no legitimate scenario in which we or any government agency would ask for payment over the phone.
Hang up and report the call to your local authorities.
These two went on a little adventure! But thanks to their microchips, our deputy was able to reunite them with their humans. Please microchip your pets to keep them safe! 🦮

Most officers don't expect a thank you note after issuing someone a speeding ticket, but we received this note from Nancy after she was issued a ticket by Deputy Sween, a member of our Traffic Team.
"I would like to express my admiration for the professionalism exhibited by Deputy Sween. His conduct, not only towards me but also towards my colleagues and passengers, embodies the qualities that promote public safety and confidence". She goes on to say, "His acknowledgment of my infraction, a reminder of the speed limits, and advice to remain attentive to prevent future incidents were delivered with a perfect blend of kindness and firmness. Rather than perceiving his actions as disparaging, I appreciated his composed demeanor while issuing the citations."
Thank you, Deputy Sween, for representing the DCSO with great character and compassion!

Something to keep in mind this Independence Day is that not everyone enjoys fireworks. More pets are lost on July 4th than on any other day of the year. Fireworks can also cause distress and bring back painful reminders for someone who has PTSD.
Leave the fireworks to the professionals and have a safe and happy July 4th!

We recently received a message from Rosemary detailing her appreciation for Deputy McCarter's assistance when her car broke down on the Beltline. He was working on our Freeway Service Team during the call. Rosemary stated, "It was a very scary situation. Deputy McCarter was there to keep me safe after almost being struck by a semi on the narrow shoulder." Rosemary also described Deputy McCarter as calm and professional during the interaction. Thank you, Deputy McCarter, for embodying the core values of the Sheriff's Office and for your dedication to the citizens of Dane County.
We would like to thank Lost Dogs of Wisconsin for donating a microchip reader to the DCSO. It can be heartbreaking to lose a pet. We hope this will help us make some pawsome reunions between our furry friends and their humans in the future.
