Missing my dearest father-in-law, Burnie Franke, on his special day. He loved birthdays and celebrating the people in his life. He was an avid baker and I remember all the special cakes and pies that were baked to celebrate life’s many occasions. Iconic Madison business owner dies on his 100th birthday Burnie Franke ran Burnie's Rock Shop in Madison for decades. He died on Thursday on his 100th birthday.

In honor of Burnie’s 100 year journey both shops will be closing at 2pm today. (7/1/23)

Burnell “Burnie” Franke has died on his 100th birthday!

June 29, 1923 - June 29, 2023

Parties were planned today and Saturday so everyone should put on a checked, short sleeve button-down shirt with a pocket protector, and wear a bola tie in his honor!

Burnie collected Sweetwater moss agates, Arikara artifacts, bola ties and s***f bottles. He was a longtime board member of the Madison Gem and Mineral Club.

A former pastry chef with a desk drawer full of polished stones at the YMCA on Brooks Street, he decided to open the first location of Burnie's Rock Shop in 1962. Some might remember the official store opening on Monroe Street in 1968 and then later moving to the current E. Johnson location in 1976, where the store still operates, run by Burnie & Marilee's son, Nevin and daughter-in-law, Sonali. Perhaps it all comes back to the bola ties. Annual trips to Wyoming to mine the agates for the ties (and the guitar picks) and a shop to polish and sell agate bolas and rock polishing gear, to fund those family trips.

Burnie was a consciencious objector who did service for the country, rather than going to fight in WWII.
A lover of dogs, and an annual baker of pfeffernüsse cookies, he had a distinctive descending laugh; "HEH Heh heh!"

But as for the lesson of how to plan a 100th birthday party?
Celebrate life every day!
