Two of the most underrated products in a man’s shaving routine is a good pre-shave oil & after shave. One of the first questions I ask when a gentleman complains about shaving irritation is if they use a pre-shave oil & if they use a after shaving soothing lotion? Of course there are other factors to a good shave such as the quality of other shaving products used, razor and other preparation such as shaving after showering or a hot towel. Another trick to beat irritation is to exfoliate the beard area prior to shaving using a skin scrub or by applying shaving cream with a shaving brush, this will rid the skin of dead skin cells making razor glide easier.

A good pre-shave oil will hydrate, protect skin and soften the beard whilst allowing the blade to glide smoothly over skin and through hairs thus reducing ‘tug and pull’ resulting in much less irritation. Another benefit is the pre-shave oil forming a coating over the skin to directly protecting the natural lipid barrier the blade, along with cleansing & repairing the skin with anti- microbial, anti fungal, & anti aging properties.

The next hidden gem usually left untouched is a good aftershave lotion, or balm. Men complain they don’t have time but then keep running into the same old problems over & over again, & do nothing to solve it. That my friends is called insanity. It takes all of 3 minutes to take care of yourself properly in your routine, where these crucial few minutes can set you up beautifully for the rest of your life when applied.
