Criticizing the Declaration or Independence or accusing Thomas Jefferson of racism could soon lead to a public school teacher being brought before the NH Board of Education for a disciplinary hearing, if certain legislators and the Education Commissioner get their way.
Even the lily-white skin of New Hampshire has been tarnished from a history of slavery and racism, which is still alive today. However teaching such a viewpoint is offensive to Representatives like Alicia Lekas, the prime sponsor of HB1255, who told the Concord Monitor “if you are going to teach it [history], you gotta do a good job of it. You can’t teach one-sided history.”
But HB1255 would actually mandate teaching a one-sided history. HB 1255 would create an Orwellian memory hole in which negative aspects of America’s and New Hampshire’s past would be erased instead of being used as a teaching opportunity.
