Yesterday, Professor Malieckal's son Leo--who was also once a toddler in Bradley--hung around with Jack while his mother Professor Henley gave an exam. A very happy spring sight.

Prof. Cronin and Prof. Matt Masur are considering a summer or fall series stream-along or online recaps of The Sympathizer for Saint Anselm alumni, students, faculty, staff, family, and friends. Let us know if you would be interested in participating. You do not need to have read the novel in order to be involved. See details below.
THE SYMPATHIZER, adapted from Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, is now streaming on Max. Prof. Masur (History) and Prof. Cronin (English) are thinking about holding some sort of online recaps or discussions about the series, probably this summer. It would be open to current students, alums, friends, etc. If you would be interested in something like this please let us know in the comments or reach out to us directly via email!

📣 NEWS: Interdisciplinary Special Topics Course is “Unlike Any Other”
High praises from faculty and students alike about the newly introduced course, "HU 301: Stories of War" led by History Prof. and taught by professors from various departments. The course provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the catalysts and cost of war. It covers the most famous wars, and introduces students to novels written from the perspectives of individuals affected.
The course is taught by Humanities and History faculty members, which helps students discover the facts and ethical implications when it comes to war.
“The faculty members were the best part of the course,” said International Relations major Jacob Akey ’24. “Each one was an expert with a deep decades-long interest in the conflicts they taught.”

English major alum and actor Stephanie Salvato Gould completed her MFA degree at Southern New Hampshire University this spring. In the process, Stephanie wrote an award-winning screenplay, "Hearts in a Sling." SNHU surprised Stephanie last weekend, just after the final performance of Speakeasy Stage's production of "Cost of Living"--by awarding her diploma and cap and gown on stage at the show. Here's the video. "Cost of Living" received excellent reviews, and Stephanie's performance was singled out as particularly good. Stephanie has also been a voice for actors with disabilities and a clear communicator about the issues that affect them. Congratulations, Stephanie, on your creativity, your talent, your tenacity, and your accomplishments. We're proud of you!
Jennifer Militello of Goffstown has been named the NH state Poet Laureate. Jennifer has taught writing courses in the past at Saint Anselm--and she is an excellent poet. Congratulations to Poet Laureate Militello!

Lauren Chooljian of New Hampshire Public Radio, History major class of 2010, and award-winning journalist who wrote, narrated, and produced the podcast "The Thirteenth Step," gave a great talk to a large, enthusiastic crowd in St. A's Jean Center last evening. Here she is with her former History professor Matthew Masur. Yes, we forgive her for spending more time with the St. Anselm College History Department than with us (and I stole this photo from them); and she spoke passionately about the value of studying what interests you at college and worrying about the future LATER. Wise advice from a wise alum.

📣 NEWS: Saint Anselm College Receives the 2024 Carnegie Elective Classification for Community Engagement. Saint A’s got a big recognition for service and we couldn’t be more proud! 👏👏👏
The college is one of 40 to receive the 2024 Carnegie Elective Classification for Community Engagement, an elective designation that indicates institutional commitment to community engagement.
The Center for Ethics' "Housing We Need" initiative was cited as part of the community engagement criteria that was reviewed as part of this award. This program works with NH Housing to provide education, foster dialogue, and do research about the housing crisis in New Hampshire.
“We are very pleased to have achieved this Carnegie designation, which affirms our deep commitment to community engagement,” said College President Joseph A. Favazza, Ph.D. “Service and volunteerism are at the core of our Benedictine heritage through the values of hospitality, community, love, and stewardship.”

Today we lay our beloved confrere, Father Cecil Donahue, O.S.B. to rest.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the Abbey Church at 11AM today followed by burial in the monastic cemetery. All are welcome to attend.
For those not able to attend, the Mass will be live-streamed and can be viewed at the following link: https://vimeo.com/event/3913254
We give thanks to almighty God for Fr. Cecil, for his 94 years on earth, and for his over 75 years as a monk of our community. We are grateful for the many expressions of prayer, sympathy, and support we have received from the many people who knew and loved Fr. Cecil. They are further signs of the blessing that Father Cecil was to all of us. The extent of his impact and legacy is just starting to unfold.
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord. And let perpetual light shine upon him.
May he rest in peace.
Join Saint Anselm's Community Resilience & Social Equity Lab and the English department for an evening of confluence at Rivers and Ravens Night on Monday, October 30th, 6-11pm! This event will unfold within the historic walls of the Grappone Humanities Institute, nestled on Saint Anselm's campus. We cordially invite you to immerse yourself in the following eerie activities: an open mic poetry reading, an abundance of board games, and a hauntingly captivating campus stroll.
In the wake of COVID-19, we recognize that the aftermath of great loss often brings collective trauma and grief. The power of sharing stories and revisiting places to forge a shared narrative of resilience cannot be understated. As the moon bathes us in its eerie glow, we beseech you to join our Plague Walk, an opportunity to pay tribute to our community's history and the unyielding spirit that resides within. Hand in hand, we shall spin tales of unwavering strength, even amidst the shadows.
This event is both cost-free and all-inclusive, extending its welcome to every member of our cherished community.

Ruth Conley, who--with her late husband Austin Conley--has been the beloved benefactress of the English department for many years, passed away earlier this week at the age of 101. Some of you may know that the College celebrated Ruth's 100th birthday last year with a celebration in the Chapel Arts Center. After Austin passed away, Ruth continued his role as supporter of the Conley Scholarship, with which one student each year receives a generous scholarship in recognition of their love of literature and writing and their commitment to the department. Each Conley scholar has written a letter to Ruth to describe their interests and their reasons for studying English. For decades, Ruth and Austin attended College events of all kinds: lectures, productions, musical events, celebrations, football games. Ruth was an active participant in the life of our department for as long as we all can remember. Ruth Conley was a student at Saint Anselm, and then a faculty member in the Nursing department. Her husband, Austin, was a professor of Classics, who also taught English and Philosophy. The English department has been shaped by Austin and Ruth's generosity, participation, and deep love for all of us and our students. The department will reflect the influence of the Conleys for many years, not just in the name of the Conley Lounge in Bradley House, but in our commitment to students and to each other, as modelled by the steadfast loyalty, patient hope, and the pure enjoyment of the arts that Ruth and Austin showed us for years and years. Ruth's wake is Monday, September 25 at Connor-Healy and her funeral Mass is Tuesday, September 26 in the Abbey Church. The obituary is attached here. https://www.connorhealy.com/obituary/ruth-conley. Thank you, Ruth. We love you.
