SENH members had a once-in-a-career opportunity to view the recently completed Sumner Tunnel reconstruction, during its temporary closure period this summer. A huge thank you to Joseph Rigney, MSCE, P.E. for offering our members this experience after hearing about the new precast arch panel design, upgraded ventilation systems, and construction challenges at our May meeting. We were able to walk the entire tunnel, view above and below the roadway, see all mechanical/electrical systems near the tunnel entry, and ask many questions about design and construction. Thanks again Joe!
We are sad to announce that Bruce Stewart, PE, SECB, passed away on April 15, 2024, losing a battle with cancer. Bruce owned and operated Stewart Structural Engineering, PLLC from Barnet, VT. Bruce was an early member of SENH and participated in the first SENH trials that established that practicing structural engineers were indeed capable of performing case studies to determine site specific snow loads.
There may be some of his engineering test equipment available for acquisition, as well as a plotter. Please contact Jeff Tirey if you are interested:
SENH sent our alternate delegate and board secretary. They got a lot of great information from this!

Are there building code provisions that you think could be better? Contact Dan Martel Chair of the SENH Code Advisory Committee or Tom Lamb Member of the NCSEA Code Advisory Committee General Requirements Subcommittee. You can have an impact on the building codes we use every day.
At the most recent SENH meeting, four teams, comprised of students and SENH members, competed in building a bridge using plastic straws and tape. The bridges needed to span 12" and were judged on structural efficiency (Load/Selfweight) and greatest load able to be supported. All of the bridges were loaded until failure, which was entertaining to watch. Check out the fun!

When there’s an emergency, doctors and nurses need to trust the safety of the building around them. Structural Engineers design robust framing systems that keep patients and healthcare staff safe. They focus on the skeleton of the building so doctors can focus on the skeleton of the body. Learn how Structural Engineers deliver excellence: www.weseeaboveandbeyond.com
Purchasing a car is emotional – especially for a growing family. The design and construction of car dealership showrooms have become sophisticated, and deliver a beautiful, welcoming experience. Structural Engineers have the problem-solving power to provide Structural Engineering Excellence (SEE). Examples include multiple roofs with different elevations that require creative solutions to transfer load, curved exposed steel elements that do not increase fabrication costs, or sloped columns that create lateral thrust forces. Structural Engineers deliver Structural Engineering Excellence (SEE) as they partner with architects to create retail experiences shoppers enjoy. Car dealerships provide a unique experience and present challenges where huge windows and unobstructed floor space provide enough room for the biggest SUV or trucks. That’s a structure that delivers.
