I can’t believe I let this happen to me.
⚠️Warning: Vulnerable Post

Over the last 6 months I have been in a daze.

I’m all about conquering the curveballs life throws at you, however the ones thrown in the last couple months took me out.

My self care, eating, sleep, communication with both myself & others dwindled.

I have just been a head bopping around spiraling & my body just followed along.

As the creator of Trust Your Body I felt like a fraud.

Here I am ignoring all my needs because everyone & everything takes priority over me.

In the last 6 months I
♨️Abruptly moved
♨️Got a dog
♨️Experienced extreme financial gain & loss
♨️Helped my mom recover from a surgery
♨️Disconnected from close friends
♨️Stopped teaching pole

All extremely overwhelming and I could not deal.

I retreated into what I knew best … my trauma responses (yum 😋)

Which always leads me to more anxiety, poor eating patterns(if eating at all), lack of movement, more body pain, analysis paralysis & alienation.

It has been a dark time & a lot of questioning of my purpose.

Yet in the last 2 weeks because of one of my amazing coaches (which is why EVERYBODY NEEDS COACHING) I had a breakthrough like never before.

She caught me mid trauma loop & made me aware of what I was actually doing.

It was wild to me that still at almost 30 years old I experience the same trauma loop as I did when it was created in my pr***en years.

Thankfully since that breakthrough, a lot of meditation, prayers & divine support I finally feel like I am regaining my sense of self.

As a high performer the unhealthy all of nothing mentality can create havoc in my mind, body & spirit.

However, I came to realize I simply need to practice what I preach.

I tell every single Baddie in TYB that life is not about either or, but always AND.

I was missing the AND in life.

I had forgotten that I could show up for myself first AND everyone else.

Not the other way around.

Because I am worth it.

Just wanted to share this in case you have also been struggling.

We all will struggle at some point, however it is only a lesson that we are meant to be taught.

Before I get into it I wanted to share why I’m even doing this.

5 years ago I had a serious problem. I was 30 lbs overweight & I wanted to get back into my active life after being out for 8 years. But, there was always limitation or pain that held me back.

Does anyone else remember when you would go to the nurse 👩🏽‍⚕️ and no matter what the problem you had they would tell you to go lay down like it was supposed to fix everything - same with pain management 🫣

To them the electrostim & bike at physical therapy is a magic pill 💊 for everything.

If that were the case you would fly ✈️ off the bike like a majestic 🦄 being with no leg pain.

However, you get off, take a couple steps & the discomfort has decreased by a little bit, yet by the time you make it out the front door & back to your car you are at the same intensity.

What is even more insane is that people sometimes go to PT 3x a week for the same protocol 🥲

Each time they leave & end up with the same result: 1-2 days of relief, then they are right back to ground 0.

Why do you allow yourself to be brainwashed 🧠 into believing that this is normal & they only avenue you have available to you to?

As a patient it is your duty to advocate for yourself 🗣

Yes it may make the practitioner uncomfortable - shoot you might be uncomfortable.

No you don’t have to be a detective 🕵️‍♀️

You just have to understand your body.

One of the biggest misconceptions & issues in the medical field when it comes to addressing pain is they go directly to the to where the pain presents.

However, that is also the reason why the pain returns & sometimes returns even worse than before.

A Rule of Thumb in TYB is go local first then go direct.

We go local to address any limitations of the surrounding tissues/joints.

This usually has the greatest impact on the area of discomfort.

When it comes to hip complaints I always want to know how the
🤔 Ankles & Knees are moving
🤔 Are there any limitations with Internal or External Rotation of the femur & pelvis?
🤔 What is the breath quality?
🤔 How is the spine moving?
🤔 What is the quality of the shoulder mobility?
🤔 How is the neck moving?
🤔 Do they have adequate circulation & body awareness?

….then I go to the hip presenting with the issue.

When you address the body in full then you have a better experience overall vs just addressing the hip … that is the primary reason why it is constantly addressed.

Sooooo if you do feel any pain, discomfort, weakness or tension in the hips… look at the calves first they reveal a world of information ℹ️

I remember when I was starting out 👶🏽

I was working full time as a Medical Scribe.

My entire body ached 😞

Everyday it was a knee, a neck, a shoulder, a back.

I wanted so desperately to be the bendy girl I use to be.

Along the journey I ran into these 9️⃣ things that did nothing but hold me back.

I remember when #1 was me 🫣

I only desired to make pretty shapes because it was “cool”

But when I came out of those “pretty shapes” I would be in pretty BAD shape 🥲

Until I learned…
1️⃣ Random training = Random Results
2️⃣ Strength + Stretch = Flexibility
3️⃣ I have to allow my nervous system to adapt to what I am doing
4️⃣ Fascial stretching yields longer lasting & faster results
5️⃣ I am on my own journey
6️⃣ Focusing on multiple planes of movement is key
7️⃣ Hydration is a Non - Negotiable
8️⃣ In order to create change I need to be actively aware of what my whole body is doing at ALL times
9️⃣ Breath is the MOST IMPORTANT aspect of flexibility

Splits & the City 🌃

So life update… I injured my left foot 🦶🏽 🙃

You know how everyone is always like I have NO IDEA how it happened

…that’s how I felt at first but I now know exactly what happened.

By tomorrow I will be 90% better than today.

Yesterday at some point it was almost impossible to walk.

Today is slightly better.

Tomorrow we are back in it to win it.

Injuries are not signs that you should just lay down & relax.

They are a sign that you have been doing too much or too little of something in particular and the body was overloaded at one instance and BAM 💥

In comes the pain.

But pain is only a symptom of a larger picture.

You will never see the true beauty of the entire canvas if you only look at one corner of the painting 🖼

I will be posting my recovery on my foot over the next couple days.

You are not dough, so stop rolling like you are 🥖

Myofascial rolling is a great technique for recovery, when it is done right!

Many believe they are actually supposed to roll over their tissue over & over again to get results.

However, it doesn’t quite work like that.

The goal of Myofascial Rolling is to open up tight & dense tissue to create more fluid flow.

If you roll it like a piece of dough nothing is opening, just getting flattened🥲

Ultimately causing further compression & the opposite of what the intention was in the first place.

To get the best results from rolling, take your time, make sure you can breathe & hold pressure around particularly sticky spots.

They need it the most 🙃

It’s always the quiet ones that you have to watch out for isn’t it? 👀

Let me tell you free radicals are the quiet ones 🤐

They are opportunists that scour around the body.

They look for things to react with & cause disruption to the normal processes of the body.

All for their gain at the suffering of your body 🥺

Making gains in flexibility is not only about stretching on a regular basis.

It’s about understanding what is happening in your body so you can better plan out your path to success 👊🏽

You have to work with your body, not against it.

Talk it’s language 🗣

Awareness is the first step to change.

If you want to make the change towards becoming more flexible, you need to understand how you are contributing to either decreasing or increasing the amount of free radicals in your body.

Some things we just can’t escape.

Pollution in the air, traffic, the weather.

Those things we can’t control.
But what we can control is what we put into our body 👄

The food you use for fuel is either going to be is a breeding ground for more free radicals to thrive or an environment where it is inhospitable 🙅🏽‍♀️

The fuel that you put into your body is more important than how often you stretch.

It’s all about the 80/20.
80% food
20% practice.

So if you’re looking to level up that 20% of your practice you need to be sure that that 80% is solid.

What to watch on TV ❤️/💀
What clothes to wear 👗/ 👖
Even, how to stretch 🤸🏽‍♀️/🧘🏽‍♀️

Knowing how to stretch and what stretches to employ to get you closer to your goals, prepare you for a work out session, or recover after a training session are essential.

I personally incorporate all three types of the stretches into my training at the right time and let me tell you the results have been astronomical ☄️

One of the most amazing things about the body is its highly adaptable nature.

Doing the same thing over and over again no longer is a challenge, it’s a mastered habit.

When you diversify things and keep your brain guessing, you get faster and more effective results 💪🏽

Don’t you just want everything to happen right now? 😤

I mean who doesn’t?

After all we live in an instant gratification society so why would we wait for anything to actually change?

The catch is, the only way we can get change is by constant action to create change.

By repeating new habits to get you towards your desired goal you were creating new patterns in the form of repetition and these new patterns build momentum to bring you closer to your desired destination ✈️

This is the only way things will actually change.

Things will only change when you change.

And it’s not about making such a large drastic change that it’s overwhelming.

It’s about taking small steps.

🛌 Going to bed 15 minutes earlier
🚶🏽‍♀️Taking a walk for five minutes a day
💧 Setting a timer to remind you to drink water a couple of times an hour

The small steps set the stage for new healthy habits.

By repeating these new healthy habits you set the stage for change.

So facts are facts right 🤷🏽‍♀️

They can’t be disputed.

Here’s a thing about flexibility training…

Everyone thinks that you need to go to the point that’s most uncomfortable and just hang out there for a lifetime.

Then you’ll finally be able to get that split you've always wanted 🥺

However , that is the quickest way to cause an injury as opposed to gaining flexibility 😵‍

Now to gain flexibility do we need some degree of discomfort?

Yes, but that’s all it should be.

You should not be holding any position or stretch in which you are unable to breathe 🧘🏽‍♀️

Lack of breath triggers a stress response in the body.

So ultimately all you are doing is telling your 🧠 to recognize this situation as life or death.

As a result your train your 🧠 to block you from performing said action.

To get the best results when flexibility training you want to be sure you can breathe & should not feel any pain.

So
what should you actually be feeling?

For starters definitely a stretch 😉
But, not one that can’t be relaxed into and progressed with the breath.

And that’s it!
That’s what you should be feeling.

The ability to use your breath to progress a stretch from mild to medium to intense, but NEVER painful.

Flexibility starts in the 🧠 first

Whether you want to believe it or not, manifestation is a real thing.

Why manifestation works is because of your Reticular Activating System (RAS).

Your RAS lives in the middle of your 🧠.

Let’s break this down without getting too complicated, because the brain can be quite the complicated place.

Your RAS is a system your brain uses to determine what is important to you and what gets passed onto the areas of higher brain function.

These areas of higher function help to process our emotion, develop language, reason out situations we are presented with just to name a few functions.

The higher brain is something unique to us humans.

Think of the RAS as a gatekeeper that controls what information passes to the higher brain, ultimately determining our daily moods, thoughts and habits.

Your RAS is fed input visually, auditorily(what you hear), temperature, pain, & touch sensations.

If you are viewing and hearing negative information this feeds into your RAS and passes onto the higher brain to process and evolve you.

If you have a history of trauma at any age your RAS takes the event(s) that happen and passes them up to help be preventative in allowing the event(s) to occur again.

Ultimately giving you the “direction” to think and operate from.

Your RAS is an amazing example of “your input = your output”

What many fail to realize is that they have a choice when it comes to stimulation.

What you put into yourself is what you will get out of yourself.

That is why the way you talk to yourself is so important.

If you talk negatively then you will increase your chances of getting negative results.

If you talk positively then you increase your chances of getting more positive results.

And this is all because your input tells your RAS what to focus on.

So ultimately if you want to become flexible you must speak to yourself kindly along your journey.

I promise you it will get you a lot further a lot faster!

Stretching is safe..MOST of the time ⏰

But there are special cases in which caution should be taken

When a woman is🤰🏽her body is flooded with hormones that allow her tissues to expand to support the baby.

Stretching of these tissues can overstimulate the production of the hormone oxytocin which takes the main stage when it is time to give birth.

Conditions involving inflammation are taken into special consideration due to the fact that stretching may cause more inflammation if the right approach is not taken.

Senior citizens are adorable as they are 🥰 require special care when it comes to stretching. The chances of injury are higher because of decreased body awareness & elevated nervous system activity.

Hypertension(High 🩸 Pressure) is also a special case because of an area is restricted from blood flow stretching can open the tissue as well as create a better flow, however it is important to not overwhelm the heart with increased concentrations of 🩸. It is used to operating in a certain state & drastically changing that state can cause heart distress.

Those with Neuromuscular Disorders have some degree of miscommunication between the 🧠 and the muscle. Stretching may not help the condition, instead may progress the condition of not done with proper protocols.

Joint replacements are false joints, they create a “false” range of motion. There is actual machinery in the body & stretching of the joint can cause instability & risk chances of having to go in again if not adjusted case by case.

Marfan’s syndrome is a connective tissue disorder where there is a defect in the gene FBN1 which produces fibrillin. A protein needed to make connective tissue strong. It affects blood vessels, 🫀, 👁, 🫁, skin, and 🦴 of the hips, spine, feet & ribcage.

Lastly Fibromyalgia is tricky. These individuals nervous system is already over firing. Stretching may up regulate the firing if not done properly to meet the patient where they are at.
