is advocating that the FDA add these three changes to their proposed labeling rules:

1. REQUIRE THAT ALL TYPES OF SUGAR BE LISTED AS "SUGAR" IN BOTH THE INGREDIENTS PANEL & THE FACTS PANEL.
The FDA should require that all of these:
• maltose,
• dextrose,
• sucrose,
• corn syrup,
• honey
• brown rice syrup,
• maple syrup,
• high-fructose corn syrup,
• evaporated cane juice
• evaporated beet juice
• evaporated sweet potato juice &
• various fruit juice concentrates...
to be labeled as "sugar".

2. CREATE A DAILY VALUE FOR SUGAR:
The National Institute of Health (NIH) should request that the Institute of Medicine (IOM) make a determination and set a suggested limit on how much sugar one should consume on a daily basis. Once a Daily Value is set, the facts panel can provide both the quantity in grams and the % of the daily value. It's not too hard for the consumer to recognize that 20-30% of the DV, is probably more than what should be consumed in one sitting (meal or snack).

3. BOLD THE FIRST 3 INGREDIENTS LISTED IN THE INGREDIENT PANEL TO EMPHASIZE WHICH INGREDIENTS ARE IN THE HIGHEST QUANTITY IN THE PRODUCT!

* Note: According to the above suggested changes, the first 3 ingredients listed in today's Log Cabin Original Syrup:
"Corn Syrup, Liquid Sugar, Water"
would read:
"Sugar, Water, Salt."

Floating On The Wings Of Appreciation
A Tell- (Almost) All-Story 🙂
After traversing the continent a few times during the last couple of weeks, I've been dreading the completion of a task, which would require me to rise in the middle of the night to telephonically pay an outstanding bill I had with a very helpful freight forwarder we used for a trade show in Geneva, Switzerland.

Paying bills generally receives a low rating on anyone's list of "feel-good endeavors". Needing to rise at 3 AM to do it, adds another dimension of aversion.

To make matters worse: I couldn't find the invoice. But, recalled having received it via snail mail, as I noted that it almost took the entire 30-day grace period to arrive.

The Inter Expologistics freight forwarding firm went beyond the pale of their pay rate to wrestle away most of our shipment from the clutches of peril when we unexpectedly fell prey to a FedEx "service issue".

The "Basel Incident" as it became to be known, started with a Swiss Customs concern with the fact that I had rounded-up the 361.6-pound shipment noted on a digitally compiled document to 362 pounds on the handwritten forms I filled-out. That was favorably resolved (after an hour and a half cell phone inquisition) only to have the matter gain more complexity, as the Basel port of entry, which is the only one to which FedEx has right of entry, does not have veterinary services & part of my shipment contained dry yogurt powder, which contained "ingredients of animal origin"! ... Said ingredients could be easily cleared in Zurich or Geneva (where they were destined), but not in Basel.

Anyway, I digress... The freight forwarder was a sweetheart & lobbied for & received a rare Customs dispensation to "break-up" the freight so that 90% of our shipment arrived at the VitaFoods Expo as planned, & I was able to carry the 36 pounds of soft-serve yogurt mix with me when I flew to Geneva for the show.

I was grateful for all that this group had done. So I purchased a bottle of 18-year-old scotch to give to them when I dropped-off my paperwork to have things shipped back to the States for our next show.
Apparently, my act of appreciation made a big impression. Because when I wasn't able to recite the invoice number I was trying to pay, & was asked the company's name, the voice on the other end of the phone perked-up and said, with a melodic lilt: 🎶 "Oh! It's 'My-Kaul'!".... Like she was referring to the Rock Star, Michael Jackson.

I blushed, because here I was trying to sneak-in a nearly late payment, under the wire & they knew who I was! And worse, I had gained the notoriety to be known by just my first name!
That bottle of scotch, a mere token of my appreciation, went a long way in Switzerland.
I was even told that my almost late payment, was appreciated.. And that I was actually one of the early payers from that conference!

I was flying high on the wings of appreciation. So much so, that instead of traipsing back off to bed, I decided to share my story.

Appreciation is often under-rated.
And with that said...

I thought I was prepared for April 1st (April Fool's Day). I consciously told myself that whatever happens, I will force myself to laugh, to help break a pattern of getting upset when things don't go as planned.

(BTW That's a good technique, I use it all the time.)

Anyway, despite all this preparation, I was still caught off guard when an e-mail marked "Urgent Attention Required" from SYSCO, our biggest Distributor informed me that certain bar code numbers on 21 of our products were showing that they weren't authorized!

(Oh, S**t! I thought to myself) We just changed our packaging! Don’t tell me that we printed the wrong bar codes on our packaging!

I looked at the online Spreadsheet that was provided & compared it to the one I had on my computer. And sure enough, the last number at the end of the 14 digit code was wrong on all of them!

I had some samples in the office, and my numbers conformed with all our packaging. In a way, I was relieved. Somehow our bar code numbers just got mixed-up on SYSCO’s end.

So I corrected the file. It took about 20 minutes. And, when I went to save the file, the last digit of each product code did a little animated dance on the page and resettled back into the wrong place!
Someone had programmed a formula that would animate & change the numbers when saved!

I literally saw RED! (I've heard that expression before, but never knew that it actually happens!)
Then I remembered it was April Fools Day! I started to laugh & cry at the same time. So, I took the rest of the day off.
