Former Oak View Elementary student returns to school to perform for todayโs classes Adam Sisneros, an Oak View Elementary alumni, recently made several return trips to his old school to talk with students about his handcrafted Native American flutes, perform for them and answer questions about his music.
Fourth grade students at Oak View Elementary School had the opportunity to hear from Lt. Colonel Nicole Jansen, who is an Air Force pilot, and immigration attorney Alma Sida during Womenโs History Month. The speakers joined the students virtually to talk about their careers and what it took to pursue their passions.
Lt. Colonel Jansen shared about all of the things she does as an instructor for the Air Force. She helped one of the fourth graders, Piper, figure out what career path she can take to become an astronaut one day. Sida shared with students about her favorite case she had to defend, which was helping her mom get her U.S. citizenship. Both speakers were able to share with the students how passionate they are about the work that they do every day.

After months of discussion and review of school building needs, the board unanimously approved placing a school funding request on the Nov. 7, 2023 ballot.
This is considered to be ๐ต๐ข๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ ๐ต๐๐ก๐ก๐๐ ๐น๐ข๐ก๐ข๐๐, ๐โ๐๐ ๐ ๐ผ๐ผ, which in addition to addressing critical school building needs, expands on efforts already made in ๐โ๐๐ ๐ ๐ผ and continues strategic plan work. If approved by voters, the tax increase would be less than $7/month for the average-value home in our district ($300,000). The plan includes:
-Secure learning environments with enhanced safety.
-Spaces for math, science and career programs, specialized learning services and growing student populations.
-Access to similar learning experiences at all district schools, including program opportunities, class size levels and the functionality of spaces.
Itโs been more than 20 years since the community has been asked to reinvest in school buildings. This final phase of ๐ต๐ข๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ ๐ต๐๐ก๐ก๐๐ ๐น๐ข๐ก๐ข๐๐ meets the overall needs of our schools for the foreseeable future. More, including proposed projects, at district279.org/BetterFuture
Please take a look at this important update on Building a Better Future, Phase II, which focuses on school building needs:
Final recommendations on school building improvements were presented to the board in April. The plan, considered to be ๐ต๐ข๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ ๐ต๐๐ก๐ก๐๐ ๐น๐ข๐ก๐ข๐๐, ๐โ๐๐ ๐ ๐ผ๐ผ, was put together using multiple years of research from various study groups that involved staff, families and community members.
๐ต๐ข๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ ๐ต๐๐ก๐ก๐๐ ๐น๐ข๐ก๐ข๐๐, ๐โ๐๐ ๐ ๐ผ๐ผ builds upon the efforts already started in Phase I, continues the strategic plan work and addresses critical school building needs. More specifics, including a full list of proposed projects, can be found at district279.org/BetterFuture.
The scope and type of work required for these school building improvements means bond funding would have to be part of the finance plan. The board is expected to determine whether to take this next step at their May 23 meeting. If the board chooses this direction, community members would be asked to consider these needs on election day, Nov. 7, 2023.

District programming has been canceled as part of the temporary move to eLearning. This includes Kidstop and Four Star Express programs and all after-school/evening activities.
