May 13 is celebrated as the feast day of Our Lady of Fatima, a title given to the Virgin Mary based on her appearance to three shepherd children in Fatima, Portugal, in 1917. The Blessed Virgin Mary first appeared to three children in the small village of Fatima in Portugal. From May through October, she appeared six times to nine-year-old Lucia and her cousins Francisco, age 8, and Jacinta, age 6.
The first message she delivered was a call to prayer and penance. She asked the children to pray the rosary daily and offer sacrifices to convert sinners. She also warned of the dangers of World War I, which was raging at the time, and predicted that another even more devastating war would follow if people did not turn away from sin.
On the feast day of Our Lady of Fatima, Catholics remember Mary's messages and renew their commitment to prayer, penance, and conversion.
Today, we thank our mothers, grandmothers, and mother figures for their unwavering love and support to our families and communities. Your dedication and selflessness do not go unnoticed, and today, we celebrate you. Happy Mother's Day to all mothers of Holy Family!
The Feast of the Ascension, which commemorates the bodily ascension of Jesus Christ into heaven, marking the completion of Jesus' earthly ministry and the beginning of his reign at the right hand of God, occurs 40 days after Jesus' resurrection from the dead on Easter Sunday. The Ascension is typically observed on a Thursday, 40 days after Easter Sunday. Although today's the official feast day in the Archdiocese of Atlanta, we generally celebrate it on the Sunday following Thursday.
