While scouting for a wildlife track & sign class, I found these saddleback caterpillars munching on yellow flag iris leaves.
The saddleback caterpillar measures about an inch long, and has poisonous spines on four large projections (tubercles) and many smaller ones projecting from the sides of its body. The “saddle” consists of an oval purplish-brown spot in the middle of a green patch on the back.
The saddleback caterpillar is a general feeder and is found on many hosts including corn foliage, apple, pear, cherry, rose, Pawpaw, basswood, chestnut, oak, plum and other trees in late summer.
If you get too distracted by late summer blooms or birds, you may not notice the rustling in last year’s leaves 🐍. The size and length of a black rat snake can be alarming when it's right at your feet! But worry not!
Though it may pretend to be venomous by behaving aggressively and shaking its tail, this species is a constrictor. They do us a favor by keeping the rodent population in check. If you're lucky enough to see one, say hello, leave it alone, and carry on with your day!

Take the "Don't Move the Rocks" pledge. Rocks in and around rivers are important habitats for salamanders, macroinvertebrates, fish and more. In addition, when you move these rocks, you can change the flow of a stream an increase sedimentation, which may change what can survive there. Please refrain from moving the rocks!

It's that time of year again!
Tonight, 169 million birds are expected to be on the move, according to BirdCast. This follows last night's 200+ million migrating birds.
You can help migrating birds by keeping feeders and bird baths clean, turning off your lights at night and keeping cats indoors. For more about how to help migrating birds, visit the American Bird Conservancy's website: https://abcbirds.org/thirteen-tips-spring-migration/

This is the flower and fruit of a passionflower vine. A great native pollinator plant that's edible for us, too! Have you had passion fruit? This photo was taken at Hyde Farm Park. Some other Cobb County Parks where you may find these are Allatoona Creek Park and Green Meadows Preserve. Where have you seen them?
