Did you know HMGS Dermatology has 4 Board Certified Pediatric Dermatologists?

Approximately 20% of the almost 200 million annual pediatric primary care visits involve a dermatology problem! Despite this, as of 2021, there were only 317 practicing board-certified pediatric Dermatologists in the entire USA. While there is a national workforce shortage, we are fortunate that HMGS Dermatology has 4 board-certified pediatric Dermatologists.

Pediatric dermatology is a relatively new subspecialty. The Society for Pediatric Dermatology (SPD) was established in 1975. In 2000, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) officially recognized Pediatric Dermatology as a subspecialty of the American Board of Dermatology (ABD). The first one-year training programs were approved by the ABD in 2006.

Dr. McMahon was trained in Pediatrics and Pediatric Dermatology at CHOP (Children's Hospital of Philadelphia). Currently, he leads the only Pediatric Dermatology Clinic in Camden at our Cooper Hospital location. He also sees pediatric skin disorders in our Hammonton and Marlton locations. Drs. Heymann, Manders, and Baker were among the first physicians in the United States to obtain their Pediatric Dermatology Board Certification. Thousands of children are seen at our three locations in South Jersey annually.

These can include misgendering (using incorrect pronouns or names), making assumptions about their transition process or medical history, or trivializing their experiences. Such behaviors, often unintentional or unconscious, contribute to a hostile environment and undermine the dignity and identity of transgender people. Recognizing and addressing microaggressions is crucial for promoting inclusivity and respect in our community.

During these peak sun hours, use umbrellas, tents, or canopies to provide a protective barrier against harmful UV radiation. Consider lightweight, UV-protective clothing and hats to shield their delicate skin further. Sunscreen with at least SPF 30 should be applied generously and frequently, even if they are in the shade.
