Thank you so much to this awesome team as we celebrate EMS Week. Your skill, commitment and dedication shows in everything you do and you are so appreciated! Our communities are well-cared for and safer because of you! ❤️

To those who choose to serve - it takes everything to do this job. It will beat you up physically. It will challenge you mentally. You see things no one else will ever see. You likely don't eat right. You definitely don't 'sleep right. Yet - something inside you let's you continue. Helping people in their most vulnerable times. You are special. You are one of very few who can handle being that person. Hospitals are closing. EMS agencies are closing. It's a scary time for our world. If you can, keep doing what you do - and know how much you are loved and appreciated!

Happy EMS week to all of the providers of pre-hospital emergency services throughout the Upper Peninsula. You are an amazing bunch. Whether you’re working EMS as a full time job, or on a volunteer agency. Your dedication to helping your neighbors in times of emergency often goes unnoticed. Please recognize these people in your community and thank them for what they do. All our communities can rest assured little easier knowing you’re out there.

If you live or work in the Ontonagon area, there are some amazing people in your midst. The people at SONCO Ambulance have worked tirelessly to be sure that you will have emergency care and transportation as the local hospital ED closes its doors. Gina Kasten and the team have spent many hours working out the details needed to continue to protect their area. They truly represent a "community-based ambulance" taking care of their own. Great job to all and we wish you the best in this new chapter!

There's so much changing in healthcare. Less people are going into the field including EMS, nursing, physicians, respiratory therapists, - you name it. Patients are also finding themselves with less options for insurance that cover basic treatment so sometimes they avoid seeking care until they are really ill to avoid the high cost of uncovered ED or doctor visits. Ambulances are finding themselves responding to patients who may have low acuity and not really need EMS or an ED. There are also repeat patients who may call for minor issues. All of these factors are causing the healthcare industry to look at alternatives to traditional ways to improve the use of resources. Overwhelmed Emergency Departments all over the country and EMS shortages are being addressed in multiple ways to try to decompress the system wherever possible. Introducing the Community Integrated Paramedicine (CIP) program into rural areas is one way that has shown to decrease unnecessary ED visits/EMS use for non-emergency calls, and other.

Maybe you previously worked in EMS and would like to consider going back into caring for patients in a non-traditional and generally non-transport role. Consider taking the CIP training program. EMT's and Paramedics are both eligible. A Michigan EMS license is required. Class includes about four months of on-line/off-line learning modules and on-site practical and then a few months of clinical work. The first class is expected to be completed by August.

Please share - and let us know if you think this is something you might be interested in - or if your community is in need of something like this to help support its residents! The program is being built around many different types of situations and we're learning and adding as we move forward. The Michigan Center for Rural Health (MCRH) is supporting this program both financially and with their leadership. For more information you can reach out to Curt LeSage (906) 449-4110 or Katrina Rushford (906) 227-1090.

As we head into the busy Holiday weeks, we add to our already crazy lives the addition of dinners and parties and social events, as well as preparations, decorations, celebration of what the season really means and the birth of Jesus Christ, and all of the special times we will spend together. For EMS professionals who already work excessive hours, and especially those who are working, attending classes and studying, it can be so much to manage. Please try to take even a sliver of time to be gentle with yourself and allow things to fall off your to-do list without guilt. You deserve some well-earned mental and physical rest just like the rest of the world! Thank you to those who work all year long to keep our communities safe - and say a little extra prayer for their safety, sanity, and peace.

11/23/2023

When you sit surrounded by friends and family today, please say an extra prayer of gratefulness for all of the EMTs and Paramedics who work every day to bring medical care to our communities. We are so blessed to have the professionals we do that give every day to help others. Happy Thanksgiving from UPHS EMS! Have a safe and love-filled Holiday!
