Good afternoon, Matthews Elementary School Families! This is Penni Beth Crisp with your Weekly Update! All kindergarten and first grade students who have opted into hearing screenings will have their hearing screened on Monday. Our PTO will host a spirit night at Qdoba from 4:00-8:00 PM on Tuesday night. Please be sure to tell them you are with Matthews Elementary School as a portion of the proceeds are returned to the school.
Wednesday will be fall makeup picture day and our next Early Release Day. Students will be dismissed at 11:45 AM and will eat lunch before dismissal. Buses will run their normal routes but will arrive home three hours early. Car rider and walker families should be in line by 11:45 AM. Please notify day care providers.
Friday, November 1st will be Book Character Day. Students may dress up as their favorite book character on this day .Please be sure your child is comfortable in their outfit and students should not wear masks. Visitors will be coming to classrooms sharing their favorite books in the morning. As a reminder, students may not wear costumes to school on October 31st. If a student arrives at school with a costume on, families will be called to bring their child a change of clothes.
Friday is also the last day of the first quarter of school. Please encourage your students to finish this quarter strong and complete all work as well as show good character. Monday and Tuesday, November 4th-5th, will be teacher workdays. Students will not come to school on these days. Please be sure to have a first quarter conference with your child’s teacher to discuss your child’s progress by November 8th.

Good afternoon, Matthews Elementary School Families! This is Penni Beth Crisp with your Weekly Update! Our Boosterthon Stinger Fun Run was a huge success! We have raised over $45,000 for our school. Thank you to all families who came out to support our students and who have given to make this fundraiser such a huge success!
Our rescheduled Curriculum Night is Tuesday night. Families can attend one of two sessions (5:00-5:25 PM or 5:30-5:55 PM). Sessions will be the same so families only need to attend one session. We will have an information session about Read to Achieve for third grade families at 6:05 PM in the media center.
First quarter parent conferences will be held starting October 21st and will be completed by November 8th. Your teacher will be sending information regarding signing up for a conference time. Please be sure to meet with your child’s teacher to discuss your child’s progress throughout the first quarter. We want to reach 100% participation!

Good afternoon, Matthews Elementary School Families! This is Penni Beth Crisp with your Weekly Update! We will have a supply drive for people affected by Hurricane Helene in the NC Mountains. Please see the flyer attached with information regarding drop off of supplies and a list of supplies we will be collecting. We will collect through Friday, October 7th.
Progress Reports for the first quarter will go home for students on Tuesday. Grades K-2 will receive a progress report from your child’s teacher. Students in grades 3-5 will check PowerSchool for updated grades. If you need assistance accessing PowerSchool for your child, please contact the front office.

Matthews Elementary School Supply Collection Drive for Western North Carolina Mountains
Hurricane Helene has greatly impacted our mountain counties. As a school community, we would like to collect supplies to help in a small way. Our students will also be writing letters of encouragement for families impacted. Please see the supplies listed below that we will collect at school starting Monday, October 7th through Friday, October 11th. Supplies can be brought to the main lobby. For car riders, families can give the supplies to our staff at morning drop-off, and we will get the supplies moved to the front lobby.
Supplies being collected:
Bottled water of any size, especially 1-gallon or multi-gallon jugs
Sports drinks (Powerade, Gatorade, electrolyte packets)
Non-perishable food
Disposable utensils
Paper towels, gloves, large garbage bags
Hygiene kits or soap, shampoo, toothpaste
Baby supplies (diapers, baby wipes, ready-made formula)
We cannot accept medication or other cleaning supplies due to health department policies.

5th Grade families, our first Tuesday Treats is Tuesday, October 1st! Help us give our teachers a terrific Tuesday! If you are able, send in a package of individually wrapped snacks for our teachers and staff to enjoy. Think cookies, crackers, and treats in individually wrapped packages for easy grabbing and no contamination. There will be PTO members to help collect at bus and car rider drop offs, and a bin for collection in the front office!
