Vinita Shaw-Simmons, M.A., LCMHCA
I am a therapist who is passionate about the client's journey towards wholeness. Where there is help, there is hope and where there is hope, there is healing.
Your true healing begins from within and taking the first steps is part of the process.
Just in case you need to know!!
The truth is this: Seeking therapy for any reason big or small is valid— and encouraged. Taking care of your mental health should be seen as routine, just like any other doctor you visit. Sometimes, we find that we just don’t feel right, even when things are generally going well. And in these moments when we decide to seek out a therapist, taking the preventive care route will equip you with the tools you’ll need in the future. This particular topic is very important to me, as I’ve seen firsthand how choosing to begin therapy at any stage of life can be incredibly beneficial. Be honest with yourself and your kids. It’s
important that we as parents learn how to
regulate before we can ask the same of
our children. Remember much of what they
learn is by what we do (or don’t do).
Trauma.... there are so many layers to this
and no one is immune. Start the healing process...talk to someone, you deserve it.
Whew! Big facts!!! 💯🤔😩
Joining (not judging) your kiddos is one of the best gifts you can them.
This is one of the Institute's favourite quotes. It is almost impossible for our children to manage big emotions if we are not able to manage our emotions. If we stand above a child and yell, threaten, or punish - a child's stress levels sky-rocket and it's impossible for behaviour to truly shift ( the behaviour may stop because they are frightened, but no learning has taken place).
If we are able to share our calm, to guide our children peacefully through challenging moments, we become a stable anchor for life-long learning and growth.
Tune in and share with others.
I am excited to join United Survivors for Thriving Beyond Surviving: Mental Resilience in the Black Community with some dope friends, Vic Armstrong and Fonda Bryant.

Let’s talk about that inner critic...self talk can
be some of the most damaging talk.
Have the audacity to consistently talk back to it and watch what happens. As a matter of fact, I’d be curious to know what begins to shift
when you begin to make these small, yet BIG changes.
Self-Talk: Your Response to That Inner Voice — Therapy For Black Girls Self-talk is the inner dialogue or communication that you have with yourself which can either be positive or negative. This inner dialogue tied with unconscious and conscious thoughts, beliefs and biases about self and circumstances can influence how one reacts and responds.
Instead of asking how are you, ask how are you caring for yourself. With so much going on, it is easy to overlook ourselves and focus on others. Self-care is a necessity not an option. Caring for your total being requires intentionality, consistency, patience, and grace.
