Self-learning is the ability to gather, process and retain new knowledge without the aid of a teacher – and it’s a valuable skill. Self-learners are extremely engaged in their education and enjoy learning new things.
This school year, encourage your child to keep a journal to write down new words they learn while reading. 📚📝
They can use Kumon's Recommended Reading List to find their next book: https://cloud.email-kumon.com/RRL
Your child can keep track of their books in their journal, make use of the Book Tracker provided by their Kumon Instructor, or download a Book Tracker Sheet at the link above to create their own!

The 2024 Kumon North America Book Drive kicked off at our Annual Instructors Conference. Kumon Instructors, Associates, and Guests at the 2024 KNA Instructors Conference in Dallas, Texas, were part of something truly incredible! We put out a call to action, inviting attendees to bring gently used books—whether for kids or adults—to our expo booth. The response was overwhelming, and we successfully collected and donated over 200 books to the Genesis Women's Shelter & Support in Dallas. These books will have a direct impact, supporting women and children by fostering education and strengthening family bonds.

Check out the details below for Kumon's 9 strategies to prevent summer regression & keep students entertained throughout the summer!
1. Creating a Summer Learning Schedule: Routine routine routine! Establish a routine to create a sense of normalcy. Provide time for outdoor exploration, educational activities, & reading.
2. Encourage Reading: Reading is an important way to prevent Summer Slide! Read as a family, watch a Read Aloud from YouTube, join a book club or read alouds at your local library.
3. Explore Hands-On Learning: Whether it's conducting science experiments, making crafts, exploring nature trails, or visiting museums & cultural sites, hands-on activities stimulate curiosity & creativity while reinforcing academic concepts.
4. Incorporate Real World Learning: Integrate everyday experiences into learning opportunities. Involve children in cooking &
baking projects to teach math & science concepts. Encourage question asking. Let your children help plan trips.
5. Enroll in Summer Camp Programs: Consider enrolling your child in summer programs or camps that cater to their interests.
Academic camps, STEM workshops, arts & crafts programs, & sports camps offer structured learning experiences while providing opportunities for social interaction & skill development.
6. Set Learning Goals: Encourage your child to set personal learning goals for the summer. Mastering a new skill, completing a reading challenge, or exploring a particular subject area, setting goals, provides motivation, & a sense of accomplishment.
7. Foster Creativity: Allow children to explore their creative side through arts, crafts, music, & imaginative play. Provide them with art supplies, musical instruments, & open-ended materials to express themselves & unleash their creativity.
8. Encourage Reflection and Journaling: Encourage children to reflect on their summer experiences through journaling or creative writing. This practice not only improves writing skills but also promotes self-awareness & critical thinking.
9. Lead By Example: Be a role model for lifelong learning by engaging in your own learning pursuits. Demonstrate the value of curiosity, perseverance, & continuous growth.
