Purim, 2024
It’s Purim, hip hip hooray!
A time to celebrate an important holiday.
A time when Jews nearly faced extinction
A holiday of the finest distinction!
A time when Haman our huge enemy
Wanted King Achasveros to make a decree
That Jews in Shushan would have to die
Please don’t kill me, each Jew cried.
Shushan was their home and they liked it just fine
The skies always blue and the sun did shine.
But beautiful Queen Esther, wife to the King
Heard about Haman’s plot and to the king she did sing
My people must be saved and I beg you, dear King
From my Uncle Mordechai, I heard about the whole horrible thing.
Save the people, for I , too, am a Jew
I don’t want to leave the palace- I don’t want to leave you!
So the King cancelled his decree to slaughter the Jews
And summoned Haman - to give him the blues.
Haman was banished from the kingdom, big surprise!
He vanished before everyone’s eyes!
And through history whenever Haman’s name is said
We drown out his name that caused us such dread.
We make noise with groggers to prevent hearing his name
The louder the better to give him no fame.
We stamp our feet and boo- when his name is recited
We don’t miss him a bit, he’s gone, we’re delighted!
We dress up in costumes to have joyous fun
3 sided hamentaschen eaten by everyone.
It’s Purim, we’re still here singing and dancing
We’re so happy to celebrate- we’re joyfully prancing!

If you’re a senior who has no family, it is especially important to have an Advance Directive which includes such documents as a Last Will & Testament, A Living Will, and a medical and fiduciary power of attorney. These documents will give you a voice and guarantee your wishes will be followed.
The person described below had no Advance Directive. She got stuck in a nursing home because she had no family and no one to speak for her. She ultimately came under the care of Adult Protective Services.
“ Five years ago, I began volunteering as a bill payer for a legally blind, 95-year-old woman on public assistance. The job involved handling paperwork that clients could no longer handle themselves, thus helping enable them to remain at home. I came to learn that this woman had no family or friends left, and she came to think of me as her only friend. During my time with her, she was also put under the care of Adult Protective Services (A.P.S.), because one of her caregivers was fraudulently using her credit card.
Last August, she fell out of bed in the middle of the night. A caregiver found her the next morning and called 911. She was taken to the hospital, treated and then sent to a rehabilitation center in a nursing home. After 100 days, as per her insurance, she was now considered a long-term patient.
She is now 100 years old, blind and lying in bed 24 hours a day, except when I visit her and take her to the patio in a wheelchair. She is in an unfamiliar place and hears screaming, crying and cursing all night from other patients. She is relatively lucid despite her circumstances, and the only thing that is keeping her alive is the hope that she can go back to her small studio apartment soon, a place where she has lived for 50 years. She has said she wants to die if she can’t go home.
Because she was protected by A.P.S. and is now in a guardianship arrangement under the care of the nursing home, I can no longer legally pay her bills or take care of any paperwork. This has meant that her rent has not been paid, and eviction proceedings are in the works. I have tried to get myself listed as a contact for her, to at least be able to advocate for better services but have come up against a wildly frustrating Catch-22 situation. She has been deemed incompetent by the nursing home and therefore can’t name me as a contact. I requested to have her evaluated again, because I don’t believe she is incompetent, and the answer was that only her contact can make that request.
The social worker at the nursing home won’t even talk to me, because I am not a legal contact.”

Dear special friend,
The New Year upon us one and all
It consistently arrives each and every fall.
As the season changes and leaves brilliant hue
It inspires us in this worldly milieu.
The awe of the season engages us
In dialogue with our Creator and all that He does.
No better time of the year than these days
To reflect on our being in a myriad of ways.
Through prayer and repentance, through charity and praise
So many opportunities to have our voices raised.
In the fervor of prayer and its divine mission
The reflection of forgiveness our holy position.
The Day of Atonement forces us to embrace
Reflections of life that fill our space.
In deep prayer and reflection, we search for the answers
To the matters of life and how faith is an enhancer.
We cry out for mercy to the Divine
Atoning for sins we committed unintentional or by design.
The fast of Yom Kippur that purifies our soul
Helping it start another year newly whole.
No matter your observance or what you do
The most important thing is YOU ARE A JEW!
Being Jewish means there is a divine presence
In your soul and its Godly essence.
May the New Year of fifty-seven-eighty-three
Bring you much peace and tranquility.
May the spirit of the days and its great awe
Bring you everything you are searching for.
L’Shanah Tovah! HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Love,
Lorrie and Barry and family
It’s July 4, twenty- twenty two
And America, I weep for you.
It’s hard to rejoice your existential life
When there are those who promote democratic strife.
A Supreme Court who along with the Conservative right
Are determined to dismantle our freedoms as blight.
Banning abortions is the first law to go
Despite the majority of Americans
who say “NO”.
The last 3 Conservative justices during confirmation hearings
Outright lied, as the nation was reeling.
The return of el chumpo to the political arena
The January 6 hearings that prove his anti-American demeanor.
Encouraging Americans to hang our VP
That’s never happened before in our history.
Inciting violence is a criminal offense
This is a guy who deserves no defense.
A President who probably never read the Constitution
While defaming and rejecting its
historical institution.
Fake electors- indictable crimes
Still talking deception after all this time.
He unraveled our nation and it’s plain to see
That he tore apart our democracy.
Will gun violence continue with no GOP reprieve?
Will mothers and fathers continue to grieve?
Will young girls be forced to bear their rapist’s offspring?
We know the consequences of such horrible things.
Black Lives Matter raised tensions throughout the land
Whites and Blacks walked together hand in hand.
The LGBTQ Community trying to quell its fears
Of losing the freedoms they’ve enjoyed these past years.
COVID, inflation, the war in Ukraine
Will our democracy ever once again be sane?
Will Russia give up its war-monger stance
Will the Middle East give peace a chance?
Will immigrants be allowed to enter our nation
As our own ancestors did with much celebration.
Will bullying in schools and work places abate
Will we pick love over hate?
Will we love our neighbors more than ourselves?
Will we reach out to others and put food on their shelves?
Banning books and history lessons
In public schools
School meals to transgender kids no longer the rule.
Will the Statue of Liberty continue to be a beacon
For those seeking truth in the freedom they’re seekin’?
What is that truth? What is the right?
What is the answer to our national plight?
The separation of church and state no longer considered to be
A significant law in our nation’s legacy.
We raise our voices in the heat of the discourse
But do we have the strength to stay the course?
Do we have the desire to hit the polls
And vote out those who think to control
Our lives… we once heard freedom ring
Now being controlled by the Conservative right wing.
Where are we headed? Where will it end?
How can our democracy be back
on the mend?
Will our grandkids enjoy the life and freedoms we once knew
How will their lives look in the future milieu?
I pray that my pessimism is quickly
dissolved
As life progresses to a normalcy for all those involved.
May future July 4th celebrations ring out true freedom for all
In a nation that historically has answered the call.
A call for freedom throughout the land
Is the song we should sing while hand in hand.

Chanucah 2021
Dear Family & Friends,
On Chanucah, through the miles
We think of those who bring us smiles.
And while we may not be physically with you
We are always thinking of …and loving you… too!
At Chanucah, the festival of lights
We rejoice in those who bring delight.
And the smiles and delight that loving you brings
Make our spirits soar and sing.
For that’s what holidays are truly for
Regardless of their religious significance, they endure
Generation to generation to pass down traditions
But also to bring days of loving emissions.
As you celebrate Chanucah in your own family way
We’ll be thinking of you as you celebrate the day.
And sending our love from our heart to yours
In the spirit of the holiday with all its overtures.
HAPPY CHANUCAH!

Lorrie, you are a true gem and I mean that from the bottom of my heart. You remembered our actual anniversary and you took the time to send us this beautiful message. I find that quite extraordinary and I thank you for that. You don't come across good, genuine people that often and I'm certainly grateful that we've crossed paths. God bless you! And yes our marriage is our destiny. It was ordained long before either of us were even a thought.

What does the Jewish New Year mean to you?
Does it mean there will be Shalom
Around the world and in our home?
Does it mean there will be no more CO-VID?
Now ravaging the unvaccinated adult and kid.
Does it mean hunger will be deleted
And all evil governments defeated?
Does it mean one more mitzvah to heal the world?
Tikkun Olam… good deeds unfurled.
Does it mean being a person with empathy
Whose kindness speaks to humanity?
Does it mean loving harder and hugging more
Spreading that love to all knocking at your door?
So much COVID isolation, families torn apart
Separated physically, but not from the heart.
Whatever The Days of Awe mean to you
As you navigate this world as a Jew
I hope it will bring peace to your soul
Making you complete… feeling whole.
For the Awe is in recognizing that the powers that be
Are omnipresent and bigger than you or me.
And if in that Awe, we reflect on our life
Assessing both our joys and our strife
We just may find that our holy Holidays
Are much bigger than us in so many ways .
If they speak to your soul and your spirit within
Your future may just be a complete WIn Win.
No matter what the High Holidays mean to you
May the days bring sweet insight into your spiritual milieu.
As you navigate forward through the new year
May you find lots of calm and good cheer.
And may all your wishes and prayers come to fruition
As you journey through life in your unique mission.
Happy New Year! L’Shanah Tovah to you!
Hope all your prayers do come true!

In Honor of Earth Day, 2021
By Lorrie Klemons
EARTH DAY 2021
Earth Day… take a deep breath and look towards the future of our global humanity
As we navigate COVID, social isolation, social unrest and guns in our society.
Can we put aside our pre-conceived notions and take a deep breath… while seeing
That the earth is our home, our nest, our center of being.
So many people each taking deep breaths… inhaling oxygen that keeps us alive
Trampling oxygen-giving greens with pesticides, not allowing body cells to thrive.
Organic… non-GMO… natural…gas emissions…climate change
Terms that we use to denote a huge range
Of concerns that multitudes of humans express each day
As we traverse our life on this planet in challenging ways.
Don’t ever take our planet Earth for granted please!
We’ve seen how quickly a microscopic virus can bring it to its knees.
On Earth Day 2021, we must each commit to assure
The health of our planet for the next generation, so pure.
Accepting the science without a doubt of its truth
Marching forward to save the Earth for all future youth.
