June 2024 Report

06/26/2024

The Mason County Sheriff's Office would like to warn citizens that we have received numerous calls about local phone scams in which scammers impersonate Mason County Sheriff's Office personnel to fraudulently obtain money.

Be aware that scammers may manipulate their caller ID to make the number appear to come from the local law enforcement. If you receive a call from them, they may tell you that you have a warrant for your arrest (from a traffic violation, missed jury duty, failure to pay full income tax requirements to the Internal Revenue Service, or some other minor infraction). They may then tell you that you may surrender yourself to the Sheriff's Office for arrest, or that you can pay a "reduced" payment of the fine to adjudicate the warrant.

Scammers often give instructions on how this payment should be submitted, usually through an "eGift" cash card, gift card, or similar payment, to a specified account or name given by the caller. These scam artists use pre-paid phones and many times are not even in the jurisdiction where the crime occurred.

Mason County Sheriff's Office personnel will never ask for payment over the phone or offer to negotiate for reduced payment in lieu of arrest.

We would also like to make citizens aware that we have also received reports of scammers creating fraudulent webpages posing as local businesses. We have tracked some of these webpages to IP addresses in foreign countries and do our best to shut them down immediately. With the rise of AI, we forecast an increase in the technological capabilities of hackers and scammers, so please use caution with any online transactions as well.

Anyone who has been a victim these or any scams is encouraged to contact the Mason County Sheriff's Office to report it at (606) 564-3309.

Mason Countians,

We are extremely blessed to have such a great EM director! Director Liess is dedicated to Mason County and works tirelessly to make sure we are always prepared. Thank you Director Liess for the work you do!

MCSO

KEMA is beginning to spotlight Emergency Management practitioners throughout the Commonwealth. This week Director Tony Liess was selected by KEMA Region 7 and 8 Vice President Gregory Priddy.

Director Liess was appointed Director of Emergency Management for Mason County in September of 2022, following almost 20 years with Kentucky Baptist Disaster Relief as well as other community services. As a KBDR volunteer, Liess has served in many areas across the country after various types of natural disasters. However, the ones that he has responded most to are the ones that have hit closest to home. Liess has assisted with local disasters in the following areas Olive Hill, Piner, West Liberty, Mayfield, Jackson, Beattyville, and Whitesburg to name a few. He also serves as an instructor with KBDR and the North American Mission Board, Liess has been all over the state and Puerto Rico training others on how to respond to disasters. Liess also has been serving as a Chaplain with the Maysville Police Department since 2011 and has assisted other local agencies as a Chaplain as well. The role that has allowed Liess to serve his community in its greatest capacity is that of Pastor of First Baptist Church Maysville, he has served there since 1999. In this role, Liess has been able to serve his local government and community in many outreach programs and during some of the community’s most tragic incidents.

Concerning his role in Mason County, Director Liess stated: “Up until now the majority of my service has been responding to people after the disaster has struck, which continues in this role. However, I now have the opportunity to take past experiences and knowledge to use them to prepare, educate, and warn people before disaster strikes. Seeing firsthand, the devastation and destruction left behind by tornadoes, floods, hurricanes, and various other types of disasters, is a powerful reminder of the forces we are dealing with. If I can serve as a tool to lighten the impact of these disasters in the slightest way, it is worth it all.”

Director Liess enjoys spending free time with his lovely family, his wife Christi of 33 years, his nine children Micah, Hannah, Abigail, Silas, Chloe, Michalle, Sarah, Leah, Jacelynn, and his 17 grandchildren.

Please join us in congratulating Director Liess for his many years of dedicated service to the citizens of Mason County and the Commonwealth.
