Alfredo Gonzalez Texas State Veterans Home in McAllen held a special Memorial Day Event this year. The Texas Guard, McAllen police department, and motorcycle groups escorted the Traveling Vietnam & Cost of Freedom Tribute Wall to our home. For two days the wall was on display. While on display, we had a Memorial Day Ceremony with a color guard, invocation, guest speakers and a white balloon release. Each Veteran who passed away from 5/2023 to 5/2024 had their initials on white balloons, their name was read as the song “I will remember you,” played and we collectively then released the balloons. We also had the POW table on display, and we explained the significance of the items on the table. We had the Veterans Field Representative from Congresswoman Monica de la Cruz’s office and from Congressman Vicente Gonzalez’s office. Family members and Veterans were moved by the experience of having the Traveling Wall at the home and the touching ceremony.

The American Veteran Traveling Tribute & The Traveling Wall will be on display for Veterans and the public on May 23 from 12 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. and the Opening Ceremony begins May 24 at 10:00 a.m. The display includes the 140-panel Traveling Vietnam Wall, the Afghanistan & Iraq Warrior Tribute, the 9-11 Tribute and much more. We had a wonderful luncheon and tour with the 16 ladies from the McAllen Red Hat Society. We are grateful for all their support for Texas Veterans.

We had a great time celebrating and honoring our Veterans for Veterans Day. Texas VLB Outreach Representative Pete Garcia sang the National Anthem and got our Veterans singing along to a few other festive songs. Thank you to everyone who made this event so special.

Demetrio Lopez, LVN, is our team member of the month for October. Demetrio first started as a CNA in 2020 and he entered the LVN program soon after. He obtained his LVN in September 2021. He is always smiling and willing to help where needed. We are grateful for his hard work and dedication.

Today, Texas VLB Chairman George P. Bush announced that the Alfredo Gonzalez Texas State Veterans Home in McAllen has been awarded a $535,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to update their existing HVAC system.
