Vulcan Forge
We are a group of blacksmiths that get together on the first Saturday of the month. Join us and learn
We are a group of blacksmiths that get together once a month to lie to each other about the size of our forges and collectively hit our thumbs with hammers.... feel free to join us anytime! We meet the 1st Saturday of each month at the Bell Barn in Tannehill State Park. Drive around behind the Tannehill Smith and past the Art Casters shed we are the building on the left with the big anvil out fron
Open forge was fun for all. Knife, tongs, S hook, rose petals and stem made (work in progress). Mike made a tool to create a tenon and flat shoulder for the rose petals to sit on. Next month is the AFC conference September 5-8th you won’t want to miss!
Well I lost my little buddy this afternoon. He was 15 years old.
Come out to Tannehill this coming Saturday 1st June. Marilyn Misulia will be demonstrating how to make a snub end scroll.
On sale 20% off.

Thank you Wayne for a great demonstration on forge welding! Wayne took 4 lengths of 1/4 square mild steel and tied them together tightly in the vice, forge welded each end together using mountain iron flux. Placed the piece in a vice and turned one and a half turns. Brushed off scale then turned back half a turn and hit it in the end to bulge out the basket twist.(see video in separate post). The basket elements were tweaked to get them to look evenly spaced. (Can use scrolling tongs or screw driver and acetylene torch for that finicky work) One end he made a hook the other created a scarf. With a 1/2 square rod about 3 ft long, he drew out one end to a taper, folded it over and forge welded the fold and drew that out to a taper as well. The first taper was then pulled out to form the spike for the fire poker. A scarf was also created on the other end. The joining parts were cleaned off with a flap disc on angle grinder and the basket twist handle and fire poker forge welded together. Then the forge welded part was heated up and knocked down to 1/2 inch square to match fire poker rod. A twist was put in the fire poker rod half way using the vice.
2023 Vulcan forge Christmas party with a nifty demo from Steve Williamson, a delightful array of delicious culinary treats followed by an excellent iron in the hat!
2023 Vulcan forge Christmas party part 1
Thank you Steve Williamson for a fantastic demonstration on how to make your rams head fire poker! Very enjoyable!
Raymond Head’s tire hammer is now in its home at Vulcan Forge
Tire hammer is IN! Open forge was fun and many irons were in the fire today! (But not too many 😉) Sidney made a mushroom, marilyn made a steak turner from a railroad spike, 4 massive spiked staples were made by Mike Linn, Wayne Lindsey, Brenda Posey and several others and Rick played with wrought iron. A beautiful fall day
Meeting this Saturday Nov 4th. We'll be setting our new Tire Hammer and holding open forge so bring your project or ideas you want to try, then get in the fire and beat on some hot iron.
See you at the Bell Barn at Tannehill, 9am sharp.
Join us tomorrow as a square corner is demonstrated in the creation of letters. This method learned from Clay Spencer while making letters for the Harris Pavillon sign at Tannehill State Park Alabama.
Congratulations to MeltonForgeworks for winning the fireplace tools set we built. It looks good in it's new home. Thanks to everyone who worked on it and who bought tickets.
Just a quick reminder. Forge meeting tomorrow, Sat 8/5, rain or shine. We will be making fireplace tools with a crane motif for our fund raiser.
Update: meeting was very productive with 4 total cranes were made using the jig Mike Linn came up with. Joint effort of Mike Linn, Wayne Lindsey, James Watley, Cecil, Marilyn Sydney and Rommel
Thank you Mike Linn for the crane handle demo. This was a fantastic and skilled demonstration!
August 5th will continue with using the crane handle design and we will be making a fire iron set. More info on that later…
Join us tomorrow starting at 9am for demonstrations on making cook sets and fire iron sets. Here are some examples of what you may see.
Cool thing about blacksmithing..need a tool? Make it .. draw knife 5160, copper pipe and salvaged red oak spindles from an old bed frame.
Join us for a brilliant demonstration you won’t want to miss. Jeff Mosley will be demonstrating how to make these stunning bracelets, made from copper or silver. Starting at 9am this Saturday at the bell barn Tannehill. Bring something for Iron in the Hat. Grilled lunch provided.
Just a reminder tomorrow May 6 2023 will be our inaugural 1st Saturday of the month meeting. If you haven't been here before, tell the gate guard you are attending the Forge meeting, then turn left as if you are going to trade days. Before you cross the bridge into Farley Field, turn right into the Williams cabin/Blacksmith Shop parting area. Bear around to the left of the Tannehill Smithy and follow the gravel road around past the casting shed to the Bell Barn. You'll see the big anvil.
We will have open forge so we can work on anything that tickles your fancy. Bring something for iron in the hat.

Vulcan Forge will be demonstrating and helping others make tools…. Punches, chisels, drifts etc. Come watch, learn and then do. This is the last Sunday monthly meeting. Starting in May, Vulcan forge will meet every 1st Saturday of the month.
Vulcan Forge is looking for a decent 2x72 or 2x48 belt grinder/sander. With all the tool making we will be doing, plus all the green coal classes held at our barn, we feel it would be a good investment. Doesn't have to be perfect but needs to be mechanically sound. Willing to pay the right price for the right tool, but if you have one you'd like to donate that works too 😁.
