Barbara Karnes, RN recently made a post about people’s assumptions of hospice. Did you know most Medicare hospice patient are only on service for 7 days or less?

Because of this late adoption, educating families and patients becomes condensed into a very short time and many end up with the misinformed notion that “hospice kills” or “she was fine until hospice pushed the morphine.”

Pain management is different in the last days of life because the body isn’t functioning in the way it used to.

Who do we serve?

We will provide care and open our home to those with a terminal illness who have a prognosis of 3 months or less and are lacking caregiver support.

We cannot serve our community without your support! Please consider sharing our information on your social media to help us reach others.

Is there a need?

“Working in hospice, I realized the need to make sure my parents have their affairs in order—trusts, living wills, long term care plans, etc. Many of the families I meet are not prepared for all the decisions and financial demands that fall on you especially when you’ve been coasting through life and then are shaken with the news of a terminal illness. Options like Villa Teresa are a much needed service in Rockwall and the NTX community as I see the need first hand every day.” -Deidra, Hospice Social Worker

Placement options for room and board (not including levels of care needs for things like meals, medication management, bathroom assistance) can range anywhere between $4500/month to $8,000+. If you have long-term-care insurance, you would need to check and see what portions of that are covered under your plan. Medicaid doesn’t cover these costs in Assisted Living facilities but do in nursing care facilities. The application process isn’t immediate and there are strict guidelines in order to qualify for “Nursing Home Medicaid.”

Private care costs in the home average around $28-$34+/ hour and can be cost-prohibitive for many.

Is Villa Teresa a Hospice?

Villa Teresa is NOT a hospice. We will partner with your hospice provider of choice—they direct all medical oversight and we provide all the care in our home in addition to meals, grief support, and education about the dying process.

Villa Teresa will relieve the caregiving burden on families who are not able or capable of providing this to their loved one, allowing them to come and go in our home as they are can. There will never be a fee for our services in our home, which takes away any financial stress on families at an already stressful time.

Omega Homes like Villa Teresa are independent nonprofits and work collaboratively with your choice of hospice.

Villa Teresa is a part of the National Omega Home Network which is a nonprofit membership organization that promotes the development and expansion of community homes for dying people.

When the growing caregiver crisis in end-of-life care and the inadequate resources of the healthcare system, Omega homes have emerged as Havens of comfort, peace and support for people in need who are dying. These homes are known informally and collectively by many different names, including Social Model, Hospice Homes, Comfort Care Homes, and Homes for the Dying.

Happy North Texas Giving Day!

If you feel in your heart you are able to help support our mission this North Texas Giving Day, please know your gifts are invaluable and precious to many who are struggling to provide care to their loved ones at a very pivotal part in their lives.

It will cost about $375/day to care for our guests and every dollar counts! Just $25 will provide cloth bed pads for comfort; $100 will help provide warm meals to our guests and their families; $275 will keep our lights on in the home for 2 weeks; $500 will support the care of our guests; $1000 will contribute to supplies and other aspects of our care; $2500 supports the average length of stay—about 9 days—for guests that come to an Omega Home like Villa Teresa.

All services provided by Villa Teresa are sponsored through the giving hearts of our community. We do not receive any funding from the government or city funding. We will run completely on individual donations and a limited number of *very* competitive grants.

Did you know months before death a person gradually begins eating less? It usually begins with meat, then fruits/veggies, then soft foods. By a few weeks before a person dies, they are probably eating barely anything and in the days leading up to, a person will probably not be able to eat anything—including water. All of this is part of the normal way a body dies.

Families often show love by sharing meals together and this can be one of the hardest things loved ones struggle to understand at the end of life. Always offer food to your loved one (favorites, high calorie protein supplement drinks, water) but be accepting of the food or drink that is uneaten. Their body isn’t able to process nutrients the same as it used to and can often time lead to complications if forced (aspiration, pneumonia, discomfort).

What are my options?

Caregiving at the end of life is a 24/7 job. It’s hard. Your hospice company can provide 5 days of respite for you every benefit period that allows a little break in those caregiving demands. This respite care is provided in a Medicare-approved nursing facility.

If respite care isn’t an option for you, there are private duty sitter services but they are not covered under the Medicare hospice benefit. The pricing varies—anywhere from $25-30+ per hour. Most of these sitter companies are not able to administer medications (they can remind you to take your meds but cannot actually give them to you).

If being at home isn’t an option for you, there are many nursing facilities available. Most ranging from $5-$8,000 + per month. This is an out-of-pocket expense, unless you have Nursing Home Medicaid, which covers room and board in a nursing facility.

I’ve been reflecting back on this time last night… Overwhelmed by the support of our wonderful community is an understatement. I got a little choked up when I was reading through our sponsors because we have poured so much into this event and I wasn’t expecting the amount of support (both by the presence of so many of you and the financial support that was selflessly given). Because of you, we exceeded our goal and raised over $28,000!

There really is no place like home. Thank you, Rockwall! Villa Teresa is on her way to bringing compassionate care to the dying.

Villa Teresa is a young charity that will provide short-term, end-of-life care to people of every race, age and gender who are enrolled in a hospice program.

Our guests will come to us in their final months/weeks/days of life, when the physical demands on caregivers become overwhelming or sometimes, when there is no one to provide the 24 hours a day care needed. Providing the daily care of hygiene, warm meals, and medication assistance allows family members to focus on spending time with their loved one.
