Here is a word from our pediatric specialist , Deborah Netz, MA, LPC, on utilizing telehealth for child therapy during the pandemic:

Covid-19 has brought many new challenges to most of our day to day lives. As adults we can usually recognize the causes of our sadness or anger. Unlike adults, children typically do not verbally express their feelings. Emotions such as sadness and anger are usually witnessed through behavior problems or “acting out”. If you or your child is struggling with the “new normal”, therapy may help.

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor specializing in preschool to elementary-aged children. I have been able to adapt my art and play therapy tools into a unique Telehealth experience. A typical session may include the use of materials mailed to the child’s home. Kids are able to engage in therapy, for example, by creating paper bag puppets, puzzles, collages, and even salt dough sculptures. Puppets are used to teach the child how their body responds to stress. At the end of each session, the child may create a “feelings drawing” with markers. This activity helps boost their self esteem and sheds some light on what the child feels is important in a safe space. Many child therapy techniques continue to be accessible using telehealth.

If you are feeling that your child is struggling, and do not know where to turn, contact us today at (469) 712-5481.

“Does life seem full of fear and anxiety? Finding the things in life we can control can help us to cope with the new uncertainties we experience everyday. It may be something small at first like just waking up at a reasonable time, or even taking a shower and getting dressed, but soon you put these tasks that you have power over together and you find that your overall mood is also starting to shift. You start to feel power over your life again“.
- Loren Gibson, MA, LMFT-S, LPC-S.

Meet Deborah Netz, MS, LPC

With over 25 years of experience in working with children struggling with anxiety, depression, inattention, and behavior issues, Deborah is a wealth of knowledge for our children and their parents. Here are some of her ideas on how to assist your child in coping with their feelings during this time:

"If your children are anxious or sad during these troubled times, some simple art activities can help children to express their feelings when they are having difficulty putting their thoughts into words. Encourage your child to make a feelings drawing using colored markers that correspond with each feeling ie. red for anger , blue for sadness, etc.. Then talk about the colors he or she chose and why they mean to them. Writing in a journal can help older children and teens sort through and express their feelings. Illustrating the writing can be a therapeutic way to further address their feelings."

Deborah continues to work with our children and their parents in managing their anxiety , depression, focus, and behavior concerns through telehealth and is available for new clients as well. She currently is in network with Blue Cross Blue Shield and Cigna. She also is available through private pay and sliding scale rates. Insurance continues to cover telehealth benefits as they do in office visits. Call or email Transitions Therapeutic Services today to set up an appointment with Deborah or one of our other qualified professionals.

Meet Phelicia Hughes, MA, LPC She's one of our therapists currently working with teens, adults, and couples. Here is how she and her family are coping with social distancing:

"During this time of uncertainty and precautions, we all can feel a bit uncomfortable and anxious. That is why it is important to keep a structured schedule and sense of normalcy. My family and I have created a FLEXIBLE schedule of school/work activities, and quiet time for me to get work done. The schedule doesn't have to be strict, just some basic ideas of what we may expect to do during the day. We all are used to schedules, from work to school. This allows us to feel more comfortable and less anxious with all of the changes and uncertainties around. Exercise and outdoor activities are also important. Being active and getting fresh air helps keep us physically and mentally healthy and balanced. Nature walks, running, kicking a ball, even just blowing/chasing bubbles in the backyard can be a fun family activity. "

Phelicia continues to practice to assist kids, teens, and adults in managing their depression and anxiety during this scary time using telehealth. She also takes Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, and United Healthcare/Optum. Insurance continues to cover telehealth benefits as they do in office visits. Call us at Transitions Therapeutic Services today to set up an appointment with Phelicia or one of our other qualified professionals.
