Digital Edition: What Firefighters Want in 2024 10/28/2024

Every year, our partners at FireRescue1 conduct the largest personnel survey in the fire service and collect its results into one comprehensive report known as What Firefighters Want.

The IAFC is proud to contribute to this one-of-a-kind initiative and, along with FR1's partners at ImageTrend and IPSDI, share the insights, lessons, and recommendations it provides with fire service leaders across the U.S. and Canada.

The What Firefighters Want report takes the latest personnel data and connects it to the diverse perspectives, lived experiences, and on-the-job realities of the men and women behind the numbers. The resulting report is a bottom-to-top document that not only advises fire service leadership on their policies and procedures but also offers a genuine connection to the people those policies are meant to serve: firefighters.

We encourage our members to take the time to access their free copy of the 2024 edition of this report and share their opinions on its content. What Firefighters Want is a personnel-driven publication that's built on your feedback and YOUR needs as fire service leaders. As the team at FireRescue1 prepares its 2025 survey, that feedback is crucial to the project's ongoing development.

You can download your copy of the 2024 report using the link below!

Origin story: The history of National First Responders Day 10/28/2024

Today is National First Responders Day. From The White House:

Our first responders represent the best of who we are as a people. They are the police officers and sheriff's deputies who answer our calls, ready to help, no matter the situation. They are the firefighters running toward the flames to protect our communities. They are emergency medical technicians, paramedics, 911 dispatchers, 988 crisis responders, and all the medical professionals providing emergency care, who sacrifice so much to be there for us when a crisis hits. Our first responders are everyday heroes, and we are so grateful for their service. In the wake of Hurricane Milton and Hurricane Helene, we witnessed the courage and bravery of our first responders firsthand and just how much they sacrifice to keep the rest of us safe, including the brave search and rescue teams who have saved thousands of lives in the aftermath of the storms.
