Finding shoes that balance comfort & safety is particularly crucial for the elderly.
Whether you're an athlete, trying to stay active, or just want to stay safe in your home, here's why choosing the correct shoes for exercise & daily wear is so important:

1. Comfort is key: As we age, our feet may become more sensitive, which can make exercise painful & uncomfortable. Invest in shoes that offer adequate cushioning & support (soft, flexible sole & a snug, comfortable fit).

2. Safety first: The risk of falls and injuries increases as we age, which makes safety a top priority when it comes to exercise shoes. Choose shoes with a non-slip sole and good traction to prevent slips & falls. A sturdy, supportive design can also help prevent ankle & foot injuries.

3. Consider your specific needs: Every individual has unique needs when it comes to exercise shoes. If you have a preexisting condition, it's important to choose shoes that address your specific needs. For example, if you have diabetes, you may need shoes with extra padding to protect your feet from injury.

4. Invest in quality shoes: they may be a bit more expensive, but they're worth the investment. Look for shoes made with durable materials that can withstand regular wear & tear. Often they are designed with advanced technology that can help improve comfort, support, & safety.

Choosing the correct shoes is crucial. By prioritizing comfort & safety, you can help prevent injuries and stay active for years to come!

National Caregivers Day is on February 21st 😍

It's important to think about how we can show appreciation and gratitude to those who dedicate themselves to caring for others.

Caregivers can come in many different forms.
- Healthcare professionals working in senior living communities, skilled facilities, or providing care in client homes; giving care and empathy every day.
- Family members, the everyday heroes that care for an elderly loved one; this can be very taxing to these caregivers, who often are doing it alone and have limited resources available to them for emotional and moral support.

- For healthcare professionals, gift cards, books, and flowers can be great ways to show appreciation.

- Hosting an appreciation luncheon with a special blessing can also be a meaningful gesture.

- For family caregivers, offering to run errands, baby/pet sit, give them some respite/time off, or simply being there as a supportive friend can be incredibly helpful.

Whatever the gesture may be, taking the time to show caregivers that their hard work and dedication is valued can go a long way.

So let's make this National Caregivers Day the best yet, and thank you to all the caregivers out there for all that you do!

Seniors often need extra attention during winter because they are especially vulnerable to colder temperatures, slipping & falling on snow, or becoming homebound & isolated.
Implement winter preparation strategies before the snow & frigid temperatures arrive to keep your aging loved ones safe, healthy, & as independent as possible if you cannot be there.

❄️ Have snow removal items available - salt/sand & shovels
❄️ Prepare for power outages: make sure that cellphones & other important electrical devices are fully charged, and flashlights are within reach & have fresh batteries.
❄️ Identify family members & friends who would be available to help if/when a storm hits
❄️ Make sure all medications/prescriptions are filled
❄️ Have phone numbers of local organizations, such as the Red Cross, to help in an emergency
❄️ Older adults lose body heat faster, so keep blankets & warm clothing, including hats, scarves, & gloves, on hand.
❄️ Stock the kitchen with food, bottled water, & non-perishables in case the fridge/freezer stops working or pipes freeze.

November is National Diabetes Awareness Month.

Diabetes is a chronic condition that affects millions of people around the world & is caused by the body's inability to produce or properly use insulin, a hormone that regulates blood sugar levels. Diabetes care and prevention are essential for managing this condition and preventing complications.

Physical and occupational therapy play important roles in diabetes care.

PT can help to:
- improve physical function and mobility
- manage diabetes-related symptoms, such as neuropathy and foot ulcers, by providing exercises and treatments that strengthen muscles and improve circulation.
- help to manage weight

OT can help to:
- maintain daily routines and activities, such as cooking and cleaning, despite the challenges of diabetes.
- manage diabetes-related symptoms and prevent complications by providing education and training on proper self-care techniques.

Other strategies to prevent & manage diabetes include:
- maintaining a healthy diet
- exercising regularly
- monitoring blood sugar levels
- taking medication as prescribed
- managing stress

Overall, diabetes care & prevention require a comprehensive approach that involves many different healthcare professionals and strategies. By working together, patients with diabetes can maintain their health and quality of life and prevent complications.

Physical & Occupational Therapy are important components of this approach and can help patients achieve their goals.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time for raising awareness about the importance of early detection, prevention, & treatment of breast cancer. Breast cancer is one of the most common types of cancer that affects women but can also occur in men. An estimated 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime.

The good news is that if detected early, it is highly treatable. It's important to perform monthly self-checks, to detect any unusual lumps or changes in your breasts. Early detection can significantly increase the chances of successful treatment and recovery.

If a mastectomy is required, physical & occupational therapy can help. After surgery, many experience pain, stiffness, & limited mobility in their arms & shoulders. Physical therapy can help improve range of motion, strength, and flexibility, while occupational therapy can help women learn new ways to perform daily activities and tasks.

PT & OT are tailored to each individual, with varying needs for more intensive therapy to only a few sessions. Therapy aims to help regain strength & independence, & to improve overall quality of life.

Breast cancer is a serious disease, but with early detection & proper treatment, many women are able to overcome it. Take the time to perform a monthly self-check & encourage your friends & family to do the same. If you or a loved one needs mastectomy surgery, don't hesitate to seek PT & OT to aid in recovery.

Together we can raise awareness about breast cancer!

Physical Therapy Month is an annual observance designed to honor the dedicated professionals who work tirelessly to improve the physical health & well-being of individuals across the lifespan.

Physical therapists are experts in human movement & function.

PTs use their knowledge and skills to help people recover from injuries, manage chronic conditions, & maintain or improve their overall physical fitness.

𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄??
All accredited physical therapy programs in the USA offer Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degrees, the professional degree required to become a licensed physical therapist.
DPT programs typically last three years (after a bachelors degree) & include both classroom-based coursework & clinical rotations. The coursework covers a wide range of subjects related to human anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, neuroscience, pharmacology, & clinical practice.

If you know an elderly person who could benefit from the expertise of a physical therapist, encourage them to seek help. Let's continue to support and honor these healthcare heroes who make a positive impact on countless lives, one step at a time!

Caregivers of elderly family members play a crucial role in providing support & assistance to loved ones. But, caregiving can also be physically & emotionally demanding, leading to burnout and exhaustion.

It is essential to prioritize self-care to maintain well-being.
Here are some ways to prevent burnout and practice self-care:

𝗔𝘀𝗸 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗛𝗲𝗹𝗽 from other family members or friends to assist you with caregiving tasks and responsibilities.

𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸𝘀 with time for yourself regularly to engage in activities that you enjoy.

𝗠𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝘆 𝗗𝗶𝗲𝘁; eat well-balanced meals & hydrate for your physical & mental well-being.

𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗽𝗵𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 into your routine.

𝗚𝗲𝘁 𝗘𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗦𝗹𝗲𝗲𝗽 for your overall well-being.

𝗦𝗲𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀; you cannot do everything perfectly all the time.

𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗟𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘀 & 𝘀𝗲𝘁 𝗯𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀. Recognize when you need a break or when more assistance is required.

Taking care of yourself is not selfish, but a necessity! Prioritize self-care to prevent burnout & continue to provide the best care possible.

Consult PT & OT to provide training on safe transfers, home modifications, task simplification, assistive devices, & more!

07/25/2023

Avoiding falls in the elderly is crucial. Physical (PT) and occupational therapy (OT) can play significant roles in preventing falls and improving overall mobility and balance.

Strategies to avoid falls and how therapy can be involved:

Physical Activity: Engaging in regular exercise can improve strength, balance, and flexibility, reducing the risk of falls. PT/OT can design exercise programs tailored to the needs and abilities of each person.

Home Safety: Remove hazards like loose rugs, clutter, & obstacles in walking paths. Install handrails and grab bars in bathrooms and along staircases. Ensure adequate lighting, especially in hallways, stairs, and other high-risk areas.

Medications: Some may cause dizziness or drowsiness, increasing the risk of falls. A medication review with a healthcare professional can help identify and manage such risks.

Vision and Hearing Checks: Regular check-ups can help identify impairments that might contribute to falls.

Foot Care: Properly fitting, supportive footwear is essential to maintain stability and prevent tripping.

Assistive Devices: Depending on each individual's needs, walking aids such as canes or walkers may be recommended to enhance stability.

PT & OT can play pivotal roles in fall prevention by providing personalized interventions and education to enhance mobility, balance, & overall quality of life for the elderly population.

07/18/2023

Proper use of a cane when walking improves safety, stability, and correct form. Here are some important considerations:

1. Select a cane that suits your specific needs. There are different types of canes available, including single-point canes, quad canes (with four prongs), and offset canes.

2. Proper cane height is crucial to maintain an appropriate posture and balance. Stand upright holding the cane & the handle of the cane should align with the crease of your wrist when your arm hangs naturally by your side.

3. Hold the cane in the opposite hand of your weaker or injured leg. For example, if your right leg requires support, hold the cane in your left hand. The cane should touch the ground about six inches outward and six inches forward from your foot on that side.

4. When walking with a cane, put weight on both the cane and the affected leg simultaneously. Order of movement: 1st cane, 2nd affected leg, 3rd uninvolved leg. This provides support & stability to the weaker leg.

5. Safety precautions: Pay attention to your surroundings, especially when navigating uneven surfaces, stairs, or crowded areas. Take small, deliberate steps, looking straight ahead rather than down at the ground. Remove potential hazards, such as loose rugs or clutter, from your walking path to decrease the risk of tripping or falling.

A Physical Therapist can assess your individual needs and provide personalized guidance on if a cane is safe & appropriate for you.

Regular Exercise: physical activity tailored your ability and health conditions helps improve cardiovascular health, maintain muscle strength, flexibility, and balance, and reduces the risk of falls.

Balanced Diet: A nutritious diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats is essential for maintaining energy levels and supporting immune function.

Adequate Hydration: Older adults should drink enough water to stay properly hydrated, which helps maintain healthy bodily functions.

Sufficient Sleep: A good night's sleep, of 7-9 hours, is important for physical and mental health.

Social Engagement: Staying socially active by participating in community activities or spending time with family/friends promotes mental stimulation and emotional well-being.

Mental Stimulation: Engaging in activities that challenge the mind, such as puzzles, reading, learning a new skill, or playing board games, helps maintain cognitive function and memory.
