Your Guide to Sunscreen

Sunscreen is a critical component of any skin care regiment. It’s role extends beyond preventing sunburn; it is a protective barrier against harmful UV radiation that can cause lasting damage to our skin. In terms of beauty, that means wrinkles, sun spots, age spots and premature aging.

Sunscreen can absorb, reflect or “scatter” sunlight. The UV that sunscreen guards include UVA rays - that cause aging, long-term skin damage and skin cancer and UVB rays - that cause sunburn, irritation and contribute significantly to cancer.

Physical Sunscreens (also known as mineral-based sunscreens) use ingredients like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide and work by sitting on top of the skin and deflecting UV rays. While they do sit on top of the skin, it’s important to opt for formulas with non-nano zinc oxide to ensure the molecules aren’t small enough to pe*****te the skin.

Chemical Sunscreens contain organic (carbon-based) compounds like oxygen one, avobenzone and octinoxate. They absorb UV radiation and, via a chemical reaction, transform it into heat, which is then released from the skin. These sunscreens do offer sun protection, however, many of the ingredients have shown potential risks for skin irritation and trace amounts are also absorbed into the bloodstream.

Your Beach Ready Beauty Routine

As temperatures rise and days grow longer, our beauty routine should also shift. Summer calls for glowy, hydrating products that multi-task. Less is definitely more this time of year.

1. Prep
Prepping your sin before a day at the beach or just a summer stroll is crucial. Choose a hydrating moisturizer specific to your skin type. Not sure what you need, ask us!

2. SPF, Always
Sun protection is always a good idea, no matter the season. Just choose SPF 30 or higher, and a mineral based with Zinc Oxide is even better.

3. Dewy, Never Heavy
Light and dewy is what you’re going for - so opt for oil or cream based products, a bit of mascara and a pop of color (think RMS Lip2Cheek, ReDimension Bronzer and Living Luminizer).

This is a completely no-frills post for one reason. These eye patches work!

As most of my clients know, everything I carry in my spa, is a product I stand behind. Everything is carefully curated for a reason. Healthy, beautiful skin for each and every client.

One of the things I get asked over and over again is the order of applying skin care. Because there are so many products, and so many different instructions, here is a quick and simple guide to follow. Also, if you are not using product for every step listed, that is completely fine (with the exception of sunscreen, put on that SPF!) Just omit what is not in your regimen and follow the rest. The key to beautiful, healthy skin is consistency.
