My Memorial Day is dedicated to Brevard County veteran Gregory Edwards - a 2 tour army medic who suffered from PTSD and, instead of being hospitalized, was arrested and end up dead after he was beat, tazed, probes left in his butt, strapped in a chair (sitting on probes), hands behind back, spit hood over head (because he was foaming at mouth due to pepper spray, not actively spitting), wheeled into a Brevard County (Florida) jail cell and left by himself struggling to breath u til he was unconscious- never to regain consciousness again. When I heard the verdict giving justice to George Floyd, as much as is possible, I was in my home office analyzing the newly passed HB 1 - the so-called ‘anti-riot’ act passed after the protests for justice for Mr. Floyd. As Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” ~ Attorney Jessica J. Travis (my take on HB 1 in comments)

BREAKING: Derek Chauvin has been convicted of the murder of George Floyd. For the first time in Minnesota history, a white police officer has been held accountable for killing a Black man.

We hope today’s verdict brings a moment of peace to our community and to George Floyd’s family.

But we cannot rest. The systems that allowed George to be murdered by police remain fully intact. We must change that.

We must ensure police are not the only resort for addressing harm.

We must remove police from low-level enforcement of offenses that shouldn’t be criminalized.

We must divert funding from policing and towards community-based services.

We deserve public safety that keeps everyone safe.
