This story first came about while I was gathering MOS for a separate story, and the question came up, what is being done about illegal racing? We tried speaking to our local police department, but after several unanswered emails I reached out to the Metro Nashville Police Department, where I had one of the most in depth interviews about the subject.
This story forced me to get creative and all things considered, it forced me to go down so many avenues that really helped the story come together. We hear from police, Memphians, lawmakers, and non-profits about the path forward towards keeping streets safer, while also making sure people have the chance to express themselves.
Seeking Solutions: As illegal drag racing becomes growing concern across the country, here is how the Mid-South is trying to combat it According to Rep. John Gillespie, during a six month period in 2022, the Memphis Police Department reported over 300 arrests for drag racing and reckless driving.
I don't get to do this too often, but I had the pleasure of sharing my heritage through Memphis news. This has been a year in the works, but for a group of talented Norwegian chefs, this has been a passion of a lifetime.
Since 2007 The Norwegian National BBQ Team has traveled to the Bluff City specifically to compete in Memphis in May's World Championship BBQ Cooking Contest. While they may be a long way from home, their talent was not left behind as they continue to be a force to be reckoned with, especially with the Exotic category at WCBCC.
For years this experience has shown some of the cornerstones of Memphis, the comradery, and how cooking has helped build a bridge between cultures.
“If you love people, give them tasty food.”
Side Note: This story also aired on the 17th of May, the equivalent of 4th of July in the United States. As the son of a Norwegian immigrant, I just wanted to express my gratitude to the Team for allowing me into their world and giving me to share this story.
Bringing international competition to Memphis BBQ | Get to know the Norwegian National BBQ Team Since 2007, the team has made a name for themselves at the World Championship BBQ Cooking Contest. In 2023, the team took 1st place in the Exotic category.

This was one of the coolest stories I had the pleasure to work on. Did you know there used to be a big presence of Chinese business back in the day on Beale Street! Thank you to the The Chinese Historical Society of Memphis and the Mid-South for sharing the story with me, keep an eye out, they have a photo exhibit coming soon chronicling some of the coolest stories Chinese immigrants have here in Memphis.
Did you know Memphis once had its own 'Chinatown' on Beale Street? Meet the group trying to preserve its lost history The first mention of a Chinese business in the Bluff City came from a laundry ad in an old newspaper, from the 1880's to the 1970's there were 166 grocery stores.

I wanted to share a couple of moments from my time in Tipton County. I was on the ground today after a devastating tornado left a path of destruction in Covington. I have never seen anything like this before and it feels almost hard to believe. My heart goes out to the city as they come together as a community.
Seeing this is surreal right now, on the ground in Covington after the severe weather last night left Crestview a shell of its former self. I spoke with a mother who said she was beyond grateful the school dismissed early, could have saved her life. We’ll have more tonight on ABC24 Memphis
Friends Of George's was successful in the obtaining a Temporary Restraining Order, which means that the "drag ban" will NOT go into affect at midnight tonight. This is a terrific first step in an ongoing battle. https://www.friendsofgeorges.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Release-3-31-900.jpeg
Wynne High School in Arkansas took a hard hit from this evening's tornado. Two people are confirmed to have died in Wynne as the tornado came through town. Just terrible to see. They are going to need help in the coming days.
