This weekend join Shelby Co. Veterans Services in honoring our veterans at the Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall. Open to the public, the wall is stopping in Lakeland and displays more than 58,000 names. SCVS will be on hand to provide resources to veterans and their families.

Over 107,000 guides have been sent out with information on local resources for seniors. Thank you Shelby County Trustee Newman for continuing to serve our seniors by making their lives easier. This summer, the Shelby County Youth & Family Resource Center-YFRC proudly welcomed two seniors from James Madison University’s Innovation Center for Youth Justice as interns. Drawn by their shared passion for criminal justice studies, Caterina Carvelli and Isatu Koroma chose Memphis and the YFRC for their impactful and innovative mission.

During their internship, they engaged in youth assessments alongside dedicated advocates, using the YFRC's distinctive approach that allowed them to address the root causes of family issues and contribute to meaningful solutions. Shelby County Government is proud of the unique work those at the YFRC are doing and extends heartfelt congratulations and gratitude to Caterina and Isatu for their dedicated service at the YFRC.

Our Shelby County Health Department WIC Program just won a nationwide U.S. Department of Agriculture award for their amazing "Baby Cafe" where mothers and families get free breastfeeding guidance. Last week, Shelby County Health Department secured a grant from CDC and National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) as part of their 2024 Wastewater Surveillance Mentorship Program. The program will expand cutting-edge public health technology in Shelby County and improve earlier detection of public health threats.

As graduation season comes to a close, we'd like to shoutout some unique graduates from the Shelby County Division of Corrections. Congratulations to the first graduates of the PAWSitive Dog Training cohort. By completing the multi-week dog training program with dogs looking for their forever homes from the Humane Society, the ladies learned career skills and improved interpersonal skills. By receiving training, the dogs are now more likely to be adopted. Thank you to the Humane Society of Memphis & Shelby for this rewarding partnership.

In observance of Juneteenth, Shelby County Government offices are closed Wednesday, June 19. Offices will reopen on Thursday, June 20.

It took many hours yesterday to bring the FY25 to close, but the Shelby County Board of Commissioners worked in the spirit of collaboration and compromise. I couldn't be prouder to end this budget year with historic raises, no property tax increase, and funding to support Regional One and schools. Plus, we finished early this year!

There are now more opportunities for local teens to learn about jobs skills and career paths and get paid this summer. The Shelby Co. Mayor's Office of Innovation and Memphis Urban League are partnering for The Mayor Lee Harris Urban Fellowship where rising high school juniors and seniors can learn about a diverse set of careers, obtain job readiness skills, and complete certifications in their choice of three different job fields. Congratulations to the Shelby County Fire Department on becoming a finalist in the U.S. Secretary of Defense’s 2024 Freedom Award for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve. This award is the highest recognition given by the U.S. Department of Defense to employers for their exceptional support of National Guard and Reserve members. By valuing their employees’ military service, they directly contribute to our nation’s security.

The SCFD was nominated by Angel Fagans, a member of the Army Reserve who recently returned home from deployment. Angel has been a firefighter with SCFD for over 8 years and felt that her employers went above and beyond in assisting her before, during, and after her deployment. The winning employers will be announced later this month. Thank you all for helping to make Shelby County Government .
